Light Is Calling: Twenty First Century American Short Films

Far off, a light is calling. A northern light illuminates the screen, the eyes and the minds of those explorers who delve into the underground, perfect the experimental, push back the frontiers of fiction and cover the tracks of cinematic cartography. The American short filmmakers of the last fifteen years come from a tradition that has digested nearly everything that cinema has to offer. And they have fun playing with their heritage, often breaking free of it in order to do it an even greater justice.

Ways Of Escape

What does it mean to escape, and where does it take one? As the poet Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz said, “One cannot simply take flight; one must flee in the right way”! The films that compose this program are naturally concerned with the question of escape, of leaving, taking flight, setting out... far from one’s family and job, from routine, from others, from danger... Even far from oneself, escaping into madness and drugs, into suicide or one’s imagination.
