Beneath the Earth Film Festival

New York's Beneath the Earth Film Festival is a year-long search for independent films that serves as a catalyst for outstanding projects to reach a global audience. Four seasonal competitions are held throughout the year during which work of high production quality, clever writing and strong performances are offered the chance to be reviewed by authorities in the film world. The winners of each season then go on to compete for the culminating grand prize. All winners will receive recognition and exposure as well as a monetary prize.

SLEEPING BEAUTY and the female gaze.

SLEEPING BEAUTY (2011)One of the films in competition at the 64th Cannes Film Festival was SLEEPING BEAUTY (2011) by writer/director Julia Leigh. While one might recall the sweet animated Disney film SLEEPING BEAUTY (1959) or the classic fairytale in reference to this title, this film is a far cry from these classics with the same name; rather, this ‘sleeping beauty’ is about the erotic desires of a young woman and her ‘female gaze’, as opposed to the much discussed, much debated cinem...

Gothic thriller concludes Noir Festival in Hollywood

user
by Alex Deleon The 13th annual Film Noir festival concluded its edgy three week run at the hallowed Egyptian Theater in Hollywood on April 20, with the stomach churning identity theft thriller, "My Name is Julia Ross", (Columbia, 1945) starring Nina Foch in a memorable role as a kidnapped-for-murder blonde in an eerie Gothic mansion on the cliffs over the sea in Cornwall, U.K. While this is really more of a Gothic murder mystery than a pure noir, contract director Joseph...

The 13th Annual Film Noir festival, known affectionately as "Noir City", arrived at its usual venue, the fabled Egyptian theater on Hollywood Boulevard, on April 1st, settling in for a three week run until April 20. Here dedicated Noir fans and many merely curious drop-ins will be treated to a series of established classics of the genre and rarely seen new discoveries in a viewer friendly "double feature" format -- just like the old days -- two distinctive black and white features from Hollywoo...

Film Forum: An Embrace of European Cinema

user
How fortunate are we film-crazy New Yorkers to have such a cinematic treasure as the Film Forum in our midst. The three-screen arthouse complex in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan has been an indispensable New York institution for over 40 years. As the only remaining independent not-for-profit arthouse theater (in a city that used to be pocketed with them), the Film Forum presents an enviable mix of the classic and the obscure, the heralded and the newly discovered. The le...

That Auteur Word

user
I’ve been doing a bit of phd work this morning and one of the areas I’ve been researching is on film authorship and I appear to have fallen in love with that word ‘auteur’ its such a rich, fresh word and very French (when you say it you kind of feel as if you live there). When I first started researching this area, I used to think that the word applied only exclusively to film directors, but - to varying degrees – I’d argue that we are all actually authors whether we ar...

Luckily Baaria, The concert and A woman, gun and noodle shop will be released on the SA art film circuit soon. The films in Durban cover a huge array with themes such as Ecolens, Wavescap...

European Films Shine At Tribeca FF

user
Soul Kitchen (Fatih Akin, Germany)    This year’s Tribeca Film Festival, which is currently in the middle of its 12 day run in New York City, boasts a strong representation of both veteran and emerging European talents. As a whole, the Festival offers a tantalizing check of the pulse of current trends and styles in European filmmaking. How these films will fare in the US market is far from certain, but for the next week, European cinema rules in downtown New York.   The na...

Where will the Festival de Cannes be in five years time?

user
A note from the President Politics, allegedly, is the art of answering questions you haven’t been asked. I won’t be doing that today. People often ask: where will the Festival de Cannes be in five years time? The only question that I find important is that of the future of independent, auteur cinema, and thus the future of film festivals, as they are basically the same thing. For a long time I believed that cinema was a kind of royal processional road along which one went from Lu...

Beaune 2nd International Thriller Film Festival

user
Last year, during the first edition of the Festival, Jury Chairman Claude Chabrol said: “The mission of Beaune International Thriller Film Festival is to underline the thriller genre, which is after all one of the most fertile and noble in cinema history, and precisely to try and find new tendencies, or suggest new directions.” Keeping this ambition alive, the second edition of the Festival will take place from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th April 2010. The Prize list of the 1st edition...

10 Things You Didn't Know About European Directors

user
By Greta Lorez   Did you know… … Jean-Luc Godard, one of the founding members of the Nouvelle Vague, was the son of a Swiss couple. Born in Paris, he spent his childhood in Switzerland and at the age of 18, moved back to Paris where he studied Ethnology at the Sorbonne. Godard, however, never severed his Swiss connection: many of his movies were shot on location in Switzerland. He lives there now. … the German filmmaker Wim Wenders (Paris, Texas, Wings of De...

Market Wrap Up For European Cinema

user
With 2009 coming to a close, which represented a challenge to the specialty distribution market in North America (and everywhere else), French cinema was the sole bright light in what has become a shrinking market for European quality film. While there were some celebrated films from Germany (The Baader Meinhof Complex), Spain (Broken Embraces), Italy (Gomorrah) and the UK (Bright Star, Hunger), their overall box office performances were considered very modest. The BBC co-prod...

The Italian Invasion Of New York

user
by Sandy Mandelberger, Film New York Editor With the tabloids on both sides of the Atlantic covering the nasty divorce spat between Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and his former-actress wife (a spicy melange of adultery, illicit sex with teenage "models" and political corruption), the Italian penchant for soap opera and high drama continues unabated. Our on-going interest and curiosity about all things Italian c...
