Film festivals are divided into categories based on the number of acquisition executives that attend.
Majors
The major film festivals, in rank, are: Cannes, Toronto, Sundance, Berlin, Rotterdam and Venice. Cannes is undoubtedly the premiere event. Toronto and Sundance vie for the number two spot, but since Sundance has become a launching pad for Hollywood films, I personally give the number two spot to Toronto - if for no other reason than the important slots it gives to foreign languag...

The halfway mark of the festival peaked for me last night with Tom DiCillo's slam-bang DOORS documentary "When You're strange", by far the best rocku-docu this writer has ever seen, but more on that in a moment. The day's opener was the morning press screening of Swedish director Lukas Moodyson's competition entry, "Mammoth", top lining hot Mexican star Gael Garcia Bernal (of Almodobar's "Mala Educacion"), American actress Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain) and featuring three terrific kids...

The Folk Singer – A Tale of Men, Music & America is a journey into the souls of men, maverick roots music and the dying old America. The film follows folk blues singer Jon Konrad a.k.a. Possessed by Paul James on tour from Texas to Louisiana in attempt to make enough money to supply for his unborn child. On his journey his crosses paths with musical peers, honky tonk propietors and religious mavericks. Together they explore their struggles, doubts, hopes and demons or as Jon's friend Scott Biram puts it: „We can rejoice in one another's sharing of pain!“ The Folk Singer juxtaposes raw human emotion, slapstick humour and wild American roots Music. The film features today's acclaimed fringe roots artists Possessed by Paul James, Scott Biram, Reverend Deadeye, Tom VandenAvond, Drew Landry and Ghostwriter.
Short Shorts Film Festival (formerly known as the American Short Shorts
Film Festival) was established in Harajuku, Tokyo in 1999, with an aim
to introduce Japanese audiences to the world of short films. The
Festival organizes national tours around Japan, gathering more than
150,000 people in the audience. In addition to these national tours,
the Short Shorts Film Festival (SSFF) has toured in LA, Singapore,
Myanmar, and Mexico establishing itself as a unique, Japanese-born film
festival showcased worldwide. In 2004, SSFF was recognized by the
Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science as a qualifying festival in
the short film category for the annual Academy Award®.
