The film is magical. For an animation to capture the raw beauty of the Australian landscape with such detail is a rare accomplishment but Nullarbor achieves this with confidence. I believe the reason for this is because they have kept the action relatively simple, focusing on the clownish activities of two unlikely characters who meet during separate road trips. Like a classic Charlie Chaplin film, the story rumbles along the Great Ocean Bite with the characters until the triumphant conclusion which has this brilliant shot that gets the audience every time <> …it ticks all the boxes for a slap-stick comedy with Australian roots and the reaction it's had from audiences this week has been encouraging for the genre. This animated short is a whimsical road rage duel full of slapstick humour. The opening message that informs the audience than the Nullarbor contains the longest stretch of straight road in the country, which because of the perceived ease of the drive inspires some weird driving practices. Bernie is a great little irrational road-rager whose negligence behind the wheel sees him nearly get into an accident with his duel partner Waddy. This causes a series of rivalries between the two that culminate not in the typical ‘Road Runner gets away’ unscathed ending that you’d probably expect from this situation. The value of Nullarbor is how Bernie and Waddy relate to each other. Waddy understands Berie’s naivety and pre-empts all of his behavior; it is Waddy’s empathy toward Bernie’s impulse to do the stupid thing that makes Nullarbor something more than Tom and Jerry.
