About the Director:

I was first bitten by the film bug when I was a teen. But man proposes, god disposes and life continues. Fate took me to a different direction. It’s not the film which has chosen me; on the contrary I have chosen it from the very upfront.

I was born on September 17, 1982 into a middle class cultural Bengali family. I am son of Sasanka Sekhar Bhaumik and Mrinalini Bhaumik. My father (He is retired now) was a school teacher and a communist party activist. I was grown up in a small town called “Mahishadal” which was known for it’s historical and cultural significance. My family always had inclination towards art and culture. My mother had immense interest in music so she had arranged music training for me and my two elder sisters.

I was sent to a primary school at the age of seven. There I met my lifetime friend Arun Bhunia. I was always a good performer in school. In 1997 I received National Scholarship award for the educational excellence. During my school days I had developed my interest in film.

The films of Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegaal, Adoor gopalakrishnan had huge influence on me. Till then, I had not yet introduced with International films.

I started reading film reviews and articles in news papers and local magazines in school days. Gradually my interest in film had been enhanced.

After completion of my school, I enrolled to the Engineering College for pursuing my graduation in Chemical Engineering as per my parent’s wish.

There I met with few of my good friends. Apart from that my college days had been spent almost unproductively.

In 2005 I completed my degree and went out to Gujarat in search of a job. Since then nine years I was deeply involved with corporate affairs. I have changed seven companies in nine years and I was successful in my engineering profession. In those days also I had been continued my habit of watching movies.

In 2011 I got married to Paulami Saha. Paulami is a Software engineer by profession. She has immense influence on my life. I also gradually had induced my addiction for films to her.

After working for nine long years in different MNCs, all over the India. I felt that the bugs were still alive and were biting me more intensely. Eventually Orson Welles, Eisenstein, Satyajit Ray, Kurosawa, Bergman, Fellini had took their firm place in my mind. I thought, better I listen to the bugs. So I bettered. In 2013, I decided to start my career in Filmmaking and left the job.

After that I had spent one whole year to prepare myself for making a film In July, 2014 we started shooting for a short film initially named “Few moments before death”. Finally after one year it turned into a narrative feature “DASEIN”.

“DASEIN” is not merely a film to me, it is my life line. The production of “DASEIN” was completed in July, 2015. Now I am in search of a distributer for the theatrical release of the film.

Film synopsis:

“DASEIN” is a narrative, live action feature film. It tells the story of a young painter Aniket Chatterjee, who committed suicide by taking sleeping pills. When he was slowly approaching towards death, different thoughts and images (Memories, dreams or nightmares) came in to his mind.

Aniket was born and brought up in an upper middle class traditional Bengali family. His father used to stay out of home most of the times due to business. His mother was his entire world. She was his only friend and life line. In one silent noon, little Aniket found his mother hanging from the ceiling. He was afraid to find the death seen in her. Since then Aniket started his journey alone. Aniket was imaginative by nature since his boyhood. He created his own world with the birds, flowers, bees and butterflies. He had generous curiosity on God and Death. He couldn’t find anything beautiful or up lifting about his mother’s going back to God. He always wanted to sense the death; he wanted to meet it tranquilly because he believed, that’s where the immortality was truly hidden.

Aniket was grown up like an orphan. He had become a painter. At his college Aniket met Hrittika. They had fallen in love with each other. They were having pleasant moments together.

Aniket’s father at his old age got married to a young lady, Anu. Anu was from a poor family and she was compelled to get married to the old man. So naturally she was not happy. Aniket was apathetic about his family. He was occupied with his creative world.

Anike’s father was busy in his business. Most of the times he used to stay away from home. Anu had to stay alone at home the whole day. At a time, Anu developed love for Aniket. Aniket came to know about it and he tried to avoid her. But at a time Anu’s affection for Aniket became wild. She offered her love to Aniket forgetting their social relationship. Initially Aniket rejected her, but finally he couldn’t control himself to have physical relation with her.

Aniket, Hrittika along with four other friends went out for a trip to “Tajpur”. At Tajpur forest they lost one of their friends “Simi”.

In the meantime, Anu became pregnant from the accidental intimacy with Aniket. She informed Aniket about it and begged him to accept her. Aniket became angry and he insisted her to get aborted. Finally they did it.

Aniket met a young lady painter Ipshita at the Art gallery. They became friends. Aniket shared his views on art and aesthetic theories. He also discussed about his dream, his freedom and his concept of salvation.

Ipshita theft his concept and won the award in an important competition. Aniket was defeated in that competition by her.

Aniket’s father guessed about Anu’s affection to Aniket and he asked Aniket to leave the house. Aniket left the house accordingly. After that Anu became a mental patient from the shocks and she was sent to an asylum.

On the other side, in one fine morning, Hrittika told Aniket that she had been realised that she actually never had love for him and finally they broke up the relationship.

Aniket had passed through all these darkness in life. God had played with his whole life but still he was not ready to let the God win. He took his own life to prove that “death” was in his own hand and God didn’t have any control over it. Finally he found his salvation through death.

Film reviews:

“DASEIN” is a non linear, post modern, meta-narrative film. In this film the filmmaker tries to reinvestigate core values of existentialism, nihilism, futurism and deconstruction theory. The film deals with issues such as personhood, mortality and the paradox of living in relationship with other humans while being ultimately alone with one self. The story revels that morality does not inherently exist, and that any established moral values are abstractly contrived. It explores the roots of eternal human desire and despair. The crisis of existence and human values in today’s material world has been portrayed in the film. “DASEIN” belong to the Meta modern art, where hybridisation of different genres, art forms and cultures are observed. The key features of this film are paradox, scepticism and absurdity. It’s narrative landscape, it’s narrative tenor, the sense of the uncanny that it is enshrouded in that way it works less in literal sense and more in figurative way. The film proceeds according to dream logic. It is a voyage from one’s consciousness to sub consciousness and at times the boundary between reality and hyper reality becomes blurring. “DASEIN” is an experimental work. Experimentation in all aspects of filmmaking i.e. narrative structure, acting style, cinematography, editing, sound designing, colour toning has been done. Finally this film is all about one’s search for the absolute truth, his inner self and salvation. Here, the filmmaker tries to redefine the cinematic art form in an unconventional way.
