Now that the ‘rentrée’ has officially begun and the whole of Paris is back at work, it is no surprise that ÉCU has been as busy as ever this month! As the days get shorter and the nights get longer and colder, it’s clear that the lazy summer is over and its time to start the build-up to our 2012 edition in earnest. The rain outside has given our judges a good opportunity to go through more and more of the fantastic films we are receiving from around the globe

Now that everybody knows why I like film festivals, this is my programme for Durban. As the city is so big and the venues far apart, I have to close my eyes and miss some excellent films such as Baaria, The Concert, Lebanon, Loose cannons, Sex, drugs and rock 'n roll and A woman, gun and noodle shop. Throughout the country old Soviet passports are being exchanged for the new Russian ones. A provincial photographer is traveling from one Siberian village to another taking 35x45 mm passport photos of the villagers. Thanks to a large number of clients and profound observation of countryside life the films turns into poetic story about world-view of people living in remote areas at the cross-roads of two cultures, of Soviet and modern Russian ones.
