After Govinda, Varun Dhawan now launches another Dehati Disco song

Ganesh Acharya and Varun Dhawan share a great camaraderie and the duo have always given good hits. In fact, Acharya, who is respectfully addressed as MasterJee, has choreographed more than 50 songs for Varun’s father, editor-director David Dhawan, during the early days of his career. Showing his support and love towards MasterJee, Varun recently paid a visit to The Club, at D.N. Nagar, in North Mumbai, on 11 May, and did the honours of launching the title track of Acharya’s lead-role debut film Dehati (rustic, home-grown) Disco. During the event, Varun also mentioned how fond he is of MasterJee, revealing the close bond shared between his family and Ganesh Acharya.

Acharya reminisced about the days when, as a little boy, Varun would travel with his father’s shooting unit to all parts of the world, where Dhawan shot his various films, and would dance the ‘disco’ in his lap. Speaking about Ganesh Acharya, who turned up in a simple pair of clothes, Varun also recreated a few of his famous dance moves on stage. Ganesh Acharya too mentioned how much he loves Varun Dhawan. Varun, along with Saksham Sharma, Drums Shivamani (the music director of the film and the legendary drums player from the south of India, and Ganesh Acharya, grooved to the title track of the film and announced a Dehati Disco Muqabla (contest) for the audiences. Varun carried Saksham on his back as he climbed on to the stage.

Two songs from the film, launched by actor Govinda, Acharya’s most famous disciple, about a week ago, that had already attracted 5 and 7 million viewers so far, and the trailer, that had garnered 17 million views, were shown repeatedly. The compère was a woman who wore a skin-tight black dress and an off-the shoulder top, conducted the proceedings, which were delayed by a whole hour, in both English and Hindi. She exhorted the audience to applaud the projected songs, and applaud they really did. Of all the moves, the hands holding the jerking stomachs of the dancers, some of who appeared to be in their 70s, if not their 80s, drew the largest applause.

One could discern the strains of the 60s’ folk song, ‘Chalat musafir moh liya rey’ (Teesri Kasam, set in Bihar; Dehati Disco is set in Uttar Pradesh, in the fictional village of Shivpur, where dance is banned) in one part of the song. And there is no denying that Super Dance-Chapter 3 finalist Saksham (his first name means capable) Sharma, who cannot be on the wrong side of even ten years, is capable of even better stuff, and is a prodigy to watch for.

Dehati Disco, directed by Manoj Sharma, is produced by Gitesh Chandrakar, Vaseem Qureshi and Kamal Kishor, under the banner of Qureshi Productions Pvt. Ltd. and One Entertainment Film Productions, and is set to release in cinemas on 27th May 2022, less than two weeks from now. In the pictures, the man with the ample girth is Ganesh, who defies all laws of ‘heavity’ while dancing, the man with the bandana is Acharya, you will recognise Saksham and the compère and what introduction does Varun Dhawan need?

Guess what the tag line of Dehati Disco reads? Dehati Disco-Englishwale sab khisko (go away, all you Englishwalas!). Well, it is a film after all, and Ganesh, during his time, must have composed so many English (Western) dances to suit the situations, in a host of films.
