At the risk of seeming self indulgent, this post is going to track my last two days in hopes of making a couple of points. After screening 8: The Mormon Proposition, I was seething with such anger that had I run into a Mormon at that moment, I would have given ‘em a good slap in the back of the head. But I’ll come back to this in a minute.
Generally outspoken, I’m also a stand up comic who relentlessly exercises her First Amendment rights. Apparently, this means I’m not everyone’s cup of tea. After taking a poll of the nine people in the press office, only five owned up to “getting me.” I don’t want or try to offend people, or go out of my way to do so, nor is it my intention to upset anyone … I just don’t care if I they choose to be upset by something that comes out of my mouth. Yesterday in the press office a woman confronted me about something I’d said. This so-called offensive statement involved the newest word to be sent to verbal Siberia, formerly known as retard, and now simply reduced to the “R” word. It wasn’t said with mean intentions, toward anyone or any group, I didn’t specifically call anyone by name, it wasn’t a subject started by me, and my point was both insightful and observational, even if I do say so myself. Long ago I discovered that its easy to attack the smallest person in the room with the biggest opinion, I’m 4’ 11”, but talk about looking for something to bother yourself with? Please, get a real cause. Which brings me back to 8: The Mormon Proposition. Its no secret that the mere idea of same sex marriage was the singular cause for the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints panties to gather in a wad, or more accurately their garments. Thankfully, this film exposes how the Mormon Church rallied, manipulated, and basically strong armed its congregation into tithing an obscene, and to date undisclosed, amount of money in hopes of derailing California’s efforts to legally acknowledge same sex marriage. With the US Constitution specifically written to separate church and state, its paramount that this kind of immoral behavior be outed. Inhumane practices, like denying a community civil and interpersonal rights, is disgusting at best. Thankfully, this movie speaks to the misguided funds used to derail the countless lives of so many Americans. My point? If you want to really be upset about something don’t worry about what comes out of my mouth, concern yourself with something real, like the mistreatment of others. Concern yourself with the effects that verbal poison has on a community. Concern yourself with how unrealistic negativity eats its way through a demographic like cancer. Who cares what the hell I say? Who the hell listens to me? I’m a comic for gawd’s sake. Get a life, grow a spine and do something to make a positive difference in life, not sit in judgment of each other. Oh and should you need a step in the right direction … just start here. We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
