Prague Fest: focus on docus on Human Rights

One World, 6th Annual Human Rights Documentary Film Festival Prague, Czech Republic, 15-22 April 2004

Organised by People in Need - Czech TV Foundation, One World has quickly emerged as one of the largest and most important human rights film festivals in Europe and is firmly established as one of Prague's premier cultural and media events.

One World 2004 will present 155 films from around the world. The Festival center will be located at the Archa theater. Other screenings will be held in popular movie theaters throughout Prague.

The full programme for One World 2004 is now available on our website http://www.oneworld.cz

Competition categories and juries
The Main Competition contains 15 full-length documentaries and offers powerful testimonies, outstanding filmmaking, and intriguing reflections on the challenges of our time. Films compete for the Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic Award for best film and an award for Best Director. The international Grand Jury is made up of acclaimed filmmakers: Nick Broomfield
(Great Britain), Robert Drew (USA), Patricio Guzman (Chile), Marcel Lozinski (Poland), and Helena Trestikova (Czech Republic).

The Short Form category has been expanded to include experimental and animated films. This category includes 16 short films. Jury members represent prestigious international film festivals and film institutes: John Anderson (USA, Human Rights Watch IFF), Ally Derks (the Netherlands, IDFA), Kerstin Hagrup (Sweden, Swedish Film Institute), Jean-Pierre Rehm (France, Documentary Film Festival Marseille), and Stefan Uhrik (Czech Republic, IFF Karlovy Vary).

The Right to Know category offers 16 in-depth investigative reports on current affairs, human rights and global issues. The members of the jury are courageous individuals who have suffered human-rights violations.

Special Guests
Each year we invite extraordinary personalities and brave individuals who dare to be outspoken and active, in most cases at great personal risk. This year ' s special guests will be Harry Wu, one of the most outspoken year critics of Communist China, and Natasa Kandic, a prominent human rights activist from Serbia and Montenegro.

Human Rights Film Network / Seminar for Festival Organizers
The Human Rights Film Network (HRFN) arose out of informal collaborations between human rights film festivals around the world and also other film festivals with a human rights element. One World 2004 is proud to announce that the HRFN will be officially established in Prague on 18 April.

HRFN founding members are: Alliance Ciné (Paris); Amnesty International
Film Festival (Amsterdam); Amnesty International FF (Belgium); Amnesty International Traveling FF (Canada); Amnesty International FF USA; DerHumAlc (Buenos Aires); Human Rights in Film (Warsaw); Human Rights Nights (Bologna); Human Rights Watch IFF (London / New York); IFF of Human Rights (Barcelona); IFF on Human Rights (Geneva); One World (Prague); Perspektive (Nuremberg); Human Rights FF (Seoul); Stalker (Moscow); 3 Continents (South Africa); Vermont IFF (USA).

To mark this occasion, One World is hosting a seminar that brings together members of the HRFN, representatives of well-established festivals and new partners from south-east, central and eastern Europe who wish to launch human rights film festivals in their own countries.

Thematic Programmes
One World 2004 will present a range of powerful, non-competition,documentaries divided into the following categories: Reconciling the Past, Special Reports, Docs for Kids, Facing Global South, Dying at Grace and Accepting Otherness.

Visegrad Highlights
Each year we screen a special selection of major documentaries produced in
Visegrad countries after 1989. This year we have asked prominent filmmakers to
make the selection. Czech films were chosen by Helena Trestikova, Hungarian
by Tamas Almasi, Polish by Marcel Lozinski, and Slovak by Dusan Hanak.

Special Events
One World 2004 will present retrospectives of Cinéma Vérité documentaries and of war propaganda films. We have prepared a special program of 10 feature films with strong human rights content. We will continue our tradition of screening films by the Grand Jury members. A very significant part of the film festival is the debates and discussions with the filmmakers and experts on a given theme. There will also be panel discussions, exhibitions, concerts and
other events.
