Beneath the Earth Film Festival

New York's Beneath the Earth Film Festival is a year-long search for independent films that serves as a catalyst for outstanding projects to reach a global audience. Four seasonal competitions are held throughout the year during which work of high production quality, clever writing and strong performances are offered the chance to be reviewed by authorities in the film world. The winners of each season then go on to compete for the culminating grand prize. All winners will receive recognition and exposure as well as a monetary prize.

the double switch

Director: Jeancharles Atzeni.
In an experimental comedy blending wit with intimacy, we follow two characters as they film their way through Paris. While lighthearted Lucy records a women’s rugby tournament for a sick teammate, reserved Kader documents life and love as a wedding videographer. Using a handheld camera style, the film gives viewers a naturalistic glimpse into two stories combined by a twist of fate. As Kader explores his past, Lucy captures the joyful energy of her teammates. Moving from one tape to the other, the film captures the commonalities and contrasts between Lucy and Kader’s perspectives. When their stories collide in a public park, the two films combine into a new and unexpected story. Humorous, unique and romantic, The Double Switch explores love as the product of art and chance.

Purgatory III Film Exhibition

+ CALL FOR FILM SUBMISSIONS NOW OPEN +

purgatory / noun / an intermediate place or state
of temporary suffering for expiatory purification

Within the word “purgatory”, it is easy to envision condemned souls, torment and darkness. However, purgatory may also reflect the cyclic state in which we often rediscover or recreate ourselves anew from within our personal inflictions. Sometimes it is the necessary stage to exorcise ourselves from the haunting ghosts of the past. Perhaps it is the serene place of self reflection and realization.

From within this, DAMNED proudly presents an exhibition of powerful cinema called Purgatory. Held on March 8th & 9th 2013 at the Tangent Gallery in Detroit, Purgatory will present various short films of deeply introspective, beautifully disturbing and darkly enlightening subject matters from filmmakers local and worldwide. This is not an industry-focused horror film festival, but a tributary showcase of the often redemptive films from the filmmaker’s personal damnations. (The full film schedule is listed further below)
