AND, CUT! CIFF 2016 WRAPS UP

Mondays: much-reviled second sequel to the universally loved Saturday, and the bane of many existences. We rolled out of bed this morning (having just rolled into it mere moments before, from the feel of it) and realized - Monday's come, and that means the 17th annual Calgary International Film Festival is over! Only 353 more days until the next one!
We buckled down hard for the last day of events this year, and planned a full schedule that would be worthy of ending such a great twelve-day run. The day kicked off with screenings of our Audience Selected Encores - including MANCHESTER BY THE SEA, ROAD TO LA PAZ and THE SALESMAN - while visiting filmmakers dropped in at films like THE OPEN, WE'RE STILL TOGETHER and ROSA CHUMBE.
SHORT FILM AWARDS: THE WINNERS
The Calgary International Film Festival is pleased to announce the winners of the short film awards in the three jurored series: the Best of Shorts, Youth by Youth Cinema and Alberta Spirit.
In Best of Shorts, the winner of the Best Overall Short Film will qualify for Academy Award® consideration. CIFF is now an Oscar-accredited festival for short films in the Animated and Narrative categories. New this year, the best documentary short and best narrative short will also win a $2,500 cash prize.
The Youth by Youth Cinema Awards showcase student filmmakers age 8-18 and awarded prizes in various categories.
“The Calgary International Film Festival celebrates the entire range of filmmakers – from promising students to the world’s most acclaimed to the best from our own backyard,” said Steve Schroeder, Executive Director, Calgary International Film Festival. “We saw amazing talent of up-and-coming filmmakers in Youth by Youth Cinema, and the winners of our Best of Shorts could go on to the Oscars."
Alberta Spirit, which recognizes the best in Alberta short filmmaking, includes a $2,500 juried cash prize. The series comprised a selection of 10 Alberta short films, handpicked by CIFF’s dedicated shorts programmers.
“The films in this package exemplify Albertan values while showcasing our landscape, crews, and stories,” said Brennan Tilley, Shorts Programmer, Calgary International Film Festival. “From the early innovation of CREE CODE TALKER in World War II to the hard working woman in GRANDMA LEARNS TO DRIVE, this selection of films celebrates pieces of what connect us all as Albertans,” said Karilynn Thompson, Shorts Programmer, Calgary International Film Festival.

2016 CIFF BravoFACT Pitch Competition.
Five Alberta producer/director teams were selected to pitch their short narrative film projects in front of a jury of industry experts and a live audience on October 1, for a chance to win $50,000 in BravoFACT funding at the Calgary International Film Festival.
WINNING PROJECT: CONSUME

Cheer on as five teams of directors and producers pitch their projects to a live jury in hopes of winning $50,000 to make their short film. That film will screen at the Calgary International Film Festival in 2017, so you’ll have seen it grow from conception. There are sure to be creative ideas, and all the other nerves and tensions of competition!
