Cambodian Film, 'FREEDOM DEAL: The Story of Lucky' Screening in New York City, November 13th 2013 - NYC & East Coast Premiere

Asian Film, ‘FREEDOM DEAL’, Reveals a New Supernatural Dimension to the US-Vietnam Conflict

NEW YORK, New York – A new movie from Southeast Asia, ‘Freedom Deal: The Story of Lucky’, will offer the East Coast of the USA a never-before-seen look at a secret part of the US-Vietnam conflict when it screens at Anthology Film Archives in Manhattan on November 13th.

The Story of Lucky', screening in New York City on November 13, 2013

“My Cambodian colleagues and I followed our leads to the most incredibly remote jungle areas” said writer-director J “Jack RO” Rosette, a US filmmaker who spent over half a decade in Cambodia researching the story. “We even located the secret, undiscovered ‘Pentagon of North Vietnam’– COSVN -- just East of the Mekong river.”

‘FREEDOM DEAL’ is set in Cambodia on May 4th, 1970, as US and Army of South Vietnam forces move across the border in search of communist Vietnamese forces and their secret jungle sanctuaries.

The controversial ‘Cambodia Incursion’ was perceived at the time to be an expansion of the conflict in Vietnam. President Nixon’s announcement of the incursion on TV sparked waves of protests across the USA, including the tragic incidents at Kent State and Jackson State Universities.

But until ‘FREEDOM DEAL’, few in the West have considered what may have been happening on the ground in Asia – a chapter in US-Asian history that is now depicted onscreen for the first time.

In ‘FREEDOM DEAL’, a Cambodian youth named Samnang (‘Lucky’) and an ornery but likeable wedding musician make their way through the conflict - encountering landmines, marauding helicopters, and surreal, bodiless Asian ghosts as they go.

Fans of horror will appreciate the film as will military history buffs. “This will be the first time that the floating vampire head-being, known in Cambodian folklore as an ‘Arb’, will appear in a Western movie” says Rosette.

‘FREEDOM DEAL: The Story of Lucky’ screens on November 13th, 2013 at Anthology Film Archives as part of New Filmmakers, New York. Program starts at 6PM.  Visit www.freedomdealmovie.com & www.newfilmmakers.com for more information
