Dhaakad, Review: Kan-gana Ran-aut-do Charlize Theron?

Dhaakad, Review: Kan-gana Ran-aut-do Charlize Theron? Whenever director Razneesh ‘Razy’ Ghai shouted action on the sets of this film, he must have meant either of two things: A. Kangana Ranaut, Arjun Rampal and a battalion of cronies get at each other, either with arms and ammunition, or fists, kicks and ambition. B: Some version of a lullaby is sung by someone, from at least four characters. There is little else happening. So, what? Is something more needed? Yes, surely! But wher...

IFFI 51, 16-24 January, 37: Acasa-The System and the eco-system “For 20 years, they, the family with nine children, lived in harmony amidst nature, in a place which was long-forgotten though it was close to the city. But fate had some other plans when the Romanian authorities initiated steps to award protection status to that area. My documentary Acasa – My Home portrays the journey of this family, who were forced to adopt city life after eviction from their cocoon in the wilderne...

Raaz Reboot: Exorcise in futility

Raaz Reboot: Exorcise in futility When the best things in a horror/supernatural film are its songs, it does not augur well. A few days before the release of Raaz Reboot (they use that in the title? I thought ‘reboot’ was a word copyrighted to journalists and IT whiz kids!) the Bhatt threesome—brothers Mahesh and Mukesh and protege Vikram—announced that Raaz 4 (now, that sounds better) would be the last instalment in the series. Foresight for sure. Raaz (Hindi/Urdu for ...

How Long Winter Lasts in Romania

Director: Iris Ponkina.
"HOW LONG WINTER LASTS IN ROMANIA" is an observational travelogue through contemporary romanian cities and countryside in the wintertime. Fragments of "Mioritza", the romanian national ballade intermingles with Jonas Mekas poetic visions. Romania, a land of contrasts, on the promising doorstep of European Union still seems to be in a state of post-communist syndrome. Romania's resemblance to Lithuania intrigues questions and skepticism. Winter as a metaphor is I.Ponkina's debut short film.
