Pushpa-The Rise – Part 1, Review: Cross your legs

Pushpa-The Rise – Part 1, Review: Cross your legs Having steadfastly kept away from the staple diet of Telugu dubbed in Hindi dished out on a few TV channels 24 x 7, one was not aware of what one was in for when one went to see the press preview of Pushpa at the invitation of a major, local PR agency, albeit with a notice of 11 hours. Firstly, an eponymous film, the title is an abbreviation of PushpaRaj. Pushpa, by itself, means a flower, and is feminine. You might be pardoned for recal...

Siraj Syed’s IFFI 2016 diary, II, Andrzej Wajda’s lingering Afterimage

Siraj Syed’s IFFI 2016 diary, II, Andrzej Wajda’s lingering Afterimage Six of Poland’s much raved and long-revered director Andrzej Wajda’s films were on display at IFFI 2016. In a fitting tribute to the international master, who died on 9 October this year, of pulmonary failure, his last film, Afterimage, was the inaugural film here. Afterimage was completed just before his death, and he had even made a draft of the trailer and sent it to his editor, before dying, at ...

After a five-year hiatus, veteran Polish film director Jerzy Skolimowski is back on the scene. At the age of 77, Skolimowski seems more energized than ever. His latest film, 11 Minutes, an Irish/Polish co-production, wowed audiences in September when it debuted at the 72nd Venice Film Festival and received a special commendation from the festival's Youth Jury. The film also enjoyed packed screenings and favorable buzz at the 40th Toronto International Film Festival, where it was fe...

Bangistan, Review: Citizen Wong Kar-Wai meets Raging Bull at FcDonald’s

Bangistan, Review: Citizen Wong Kar-Wai meets Raging Bull at FcDonald’s If references, allusions and name-dropping could make a film watchable, Bangistan would have arrived with a bang. Sadly for debutant director Karan Anshuman, that récipé fails to tickle the taste-buds, and the film turns out be a dish that is half un-cooked and half over-cooked. Why he chose to use crutches like parodying the title of Orson Welles’ all-time masterpiece, Citizen Kane, poking fun a...

You get St. James Place, the director's latest production, which just wrapped its first leg of principal photography in New York. Pawel Pawlikowski's Lofty "Ida"

"So you are a Jewish nun," says Wanda Gruz (Agata Kulesza) on sizing up her niece Anna (Agata Trzebuchowska) in Pawel Pawlikowski's luminous black-and-white drama Ida. The audience shares in Sister Anna's astoundment as she learns that her birth name was Ida Lebenstein. This cowled waif we first meet adorning and adoring a Christ figure, a Jew? Never in her 18 years of coming up in the convent did such a thought ever gefilte her fair head. But now, in wintry Poland of the ea...

Wie das Binnenmeer

Director: Andreas Hyronimus.

Rather the career of the shy Simon (Jonas Minthe) was planned by his father: After finishing school he was due to study and afterwards take over the company of his dad. But the vest of a car salesman seems not to fit. Together with his best friend Paul (Julian Trostorf) Simon steals the favorite car of his father and the trip begins. On the way to the grandmother of Simon in poland, they have strange encounters and learn to see things in another way.

„Wie das Binnenmeer“ is a movie about friendship of two young men. Both grew up in a small german town near the Baltic Sea. They start a trip to another country and begin a new part of their life. The film tells the feeling of liberty while driving in a car and screaming outside the window. Looking on the sea for hours and getting the feeling to swim away. Going away without any plan and aim and just enjoying the moment. „Wie das Binnenmeer“ describes a typical story of a road-trip while using brilliant and atmospheric pictures. Because of the great soundtrack it is a pleasure to watch and hear at the same time.
