IFFI 52, 034: Some competition films not competitive, below par
When you have already attended 44 IFFIs, you pretty much know what to expect. Or do you? Arriving from Mumbai by train on the 20th morning, the day of the inauguration, I found my usual hotel in an unkempt state. The owner, who had a flat there till some years ago, has let it sink into squalor, but critics like me, who fund all own expenses at IFFI, cannot really complain. A couple of hours later, after...
"terroir" will have its European Premiere in Budapest, Hungary with the 22nd annual Faludi Film Festival, November 27-30, 2019. Written/helmed/produced by Dawn Westlake under her Ron de Cana Prods, Inc. shingle, "terroir" was filmed in Wheaton & Peru, Illinois, USA, Font Romeu, France and Vilafranca del Penedes, Catalunya, Spain by Pol Carrizo Vilarroig of Imatge Barcelona. Pol also did the editing and considerable visual effects for the film. A score was written and West...
16th Third Eye Asian Film Festival: XI
Sixteen years is a long time in the life of a film festival. It seems an even bigger achievement when you consider the upheavals that the Third Eye Asian Film Festival has undergone during its tenure. In fact, it is a miracle that it has continued, against all odds. Asian Film Foundation, headed by Kiran Shantaram, son of late V. Shantaram, remains the driving force, as does Sudhir Nandgaonkar, journalist and a bunch of teenage students pool in their res...
16th Third Eye Asian Film Festival: IV
Screenings continued on Day 4, 5 and 6, and two films were memorable. One was a blast from 1956, made by an all-time great, and the other a laudable 2011 effort, shot in his home country, guerrilla style, by a returning prodigy, without permission
I managed to attend nine shows out of the 15, which is a reasonable score. But here I will speak of just two films, since there is much to say.

16th Third Eye Asian Film Festival: III
Of the 10 feature films screened at the 16th Third Eye Asian Film Festival (TEAFF) during the first three days, I caught four and opted out of a fifth because I had seen it, albeit decades ago. Two of these were Indian, one Egyptian and one from Taiwan-Myanmar.
Ziprya, based on the Arun Sadhu novel and chosen as the inaugural film, was big let-down. Made in amateurish style, full of tropes and stock screenplay, it did great disservice to the memory of ...

by Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent Documentary films are supposed to wake us up -- usually to some strange sub-culture (read: the world of Baby Beauty Pageants or Professional Eating Contests) -- to give a glimpse at how remarkably bizarre human beings can be. Typically with films, we're allowed to become voyeurs, stare agape at the amusing spectacle of mankind. Not so with TORN FROM THE FLAG, filmmaker Klaudia Kovacs' chronicle of the 1956 October Revolution in Hungary that...
Those involved in the Hungarian Film Industry are proud to have such a large selection of films screening at the Festival this year. They include the competition piece "Tender Son" by Kornel Mundruczo; the short film "Here I Am" by Balint Szimler; a piece for the Director's Fortnight "Adrinn Pal" by Agnes Kocsis; and Cannes Classics from 1939 "Two Girls on the Street" by Andre de Toth. The Pavilion has received many congratulatory remarks over their ...

Moleman is a documentary diary about the independent subcultures of a bustling Central European capital, Budapest.
Under the cultural surface of the metropolis lies a flourishing art life, and alternative recreational activities are available. There are many who do not follow the mainstream taste, and do not fall for the temptation of the commercial media. The originators of Budapest’s subcultures and their audience represent hundreds of thousands of people. These subcultures and artists should not be underrated or disregarded. Moleman chooses five characters from this world, and allows us to peek through their eyes into a culture and lifestyle that lie out of the realm of celebrities, that is other than Pop Idol or the soap opera „Between Friends” or the pop band Hooligans. But it exists, creates works and is taking shape.

The flourishing Jameson CineFest will celebrate its 8th edition in September 2011, housing in a new cultural complex House of Arts. Each year, after a careful pre-selection, the top 15-20 features and 40-50 shorts, documentaries and animation films have the opportunity to compete in the official program. Most of the films came from Central Europe, from the US and Germany, but we received films from Indonesia to South America. Jameson CineFest provides an unique look into young international cinema's landscape, screening the best flicks from all over the world.
Many attractive supplementary programs, exhibitions, concerts, film history workshops, roundtable discussions will accompany the nightly screenings. Our CineClassics series started in 2010: explore with us Hungary's exceptionally rich film heritage: Oscar winner British screenwriter Emeric Pressburger was born in Miskolc, legendary founder of Paramount PicturesAdolph Zukor in the nearby village Ricse, 20th Century-Fox founder William Fox in Tolcsva, in the heart of the renowned Tokaj wine region, just to name a few. The 2009 conference dedicated to Emeric Pressburger (with the participation of his Oscar winner grandson Kevin Macdonald), and the 2010 workshop about Zoltan Korda was a true gem.
Jameson CineFest is one of the most attractive festivals of Central Europe, where our guests can get know the fresh cavalcade of world cinema, the hidden treasures of film history, fine food and drinks, concerts and parties - with true Hungarian hospitality.
See you in Miskolc in September 2011!
