Sundance Film Festival 2021 Film Highlights

As I noted in my earlier Context and Data report about Sundance 2021, the festival delivered an effective hybrid adaptation to the rapidly changing film universe by providing national and international online streaming, in-person screenings in Utah and independent art cinemas, as well as using drive-ins in numerous locations throughout the U.S. Sundance generated the largest audience it has ever experienced, reaching a total audience of 600,000 viewers, with event participants close to triplin...

addis nocturne

Director: MAXIMOFF Catherine.
Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, XXIst century. In the light of neon or tropical heavens, Addis Nocturne is an ode for a musical treasure with contagious tones which few people know. Addis, its urban poetry, its night birds, its artists, is to be discovered through the sounds of its music. Live or recorded, the music hits of the discography collection Les Ethiopiques are in their natural setting. From its tiny bar up to the stage of a big festival, the powerful voice of the azmari singer Eténesh Wassié abolishes the borders.

Filmmaker Melissa Donovan Finds Hope in Ethiopia and "Zemene"

By its title alone, Zemene, Melissa Donovan's captivating documentary says there's something special about its name character. There is. Accompanied by her Uncle Menormelkam, she has come to city of Gondar seeking medical treatment that can keep her from death's door. No such luck -- yet. We discover Zemene at the s...

Ethiopian Oscar Contender Set For Palm Springs

user
The Palm Springs International Film Festival, the first major film event of the 2011 film calendar, is known, among other things, for its embrace of films being considered for the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The Festival routinely screens most of the films eligible, screening the films that the countries themselves have put forward for nomination. This offers a wide and diverting survey of the state of world cinema. One interesting title this yea...

New York Sephardic Jewish Film Festival

The Sephardic Film Festival was founded in 1990 by Sephardic House (now American Sephardi Federation/Sephardic House).  It was the first Jewish film festival in New York City.   Its goal:

"to illuminate the scope of the
Sephardic experience; to raise the consciousness of the American Jewish, and non-Jewish, community to a better understanding of Sephardic Jewry; and to present, through the medium of film, the history, literature, poetry, music, dance, customs and traditions of the

Sephardic world."
