An essential feature of every international film festival around the globe, mater classes abound at IFFI too. FFSI, in collaboration with DFF, chose to highlight their benefits in skill-building at the third Open Forum. An open-air affair, it did not attract too many attendees. Firstly, the location was remote and secondly the timing that has been a permanent slot for Open Forum at IFFI is from 1.30 pm t...

Race, Review: Giving racists a run for their money
How long does it take for an Olympic champion to run 100 metres? Less than 10 seconds. Jesse Owens (1913-1980) was the first American in the history of Olympic track and field to win four gold medals in a single Olympiad. Back in 1936, the attention span of viewers must have been considerably longer than in this age of nano-second technology. Therefore, to make a 2h 14m film on events that occurred 80 years ago, to attract dwindling audiences...
Once again, recently closed Fantasia International Film Festival (19th edition, July 14 - August 5, Montreal 2015), the largest genre film festival in North America, has offered an incredible program. Among 22 world premieres, a special place belongs to She Who Must Burn, a “burning” piece by legendary iconoclastic filmmaker Larry Kent, pioneer of Canadian independent scene since early 1960ies. Unfortunately, Kent is not so widely known even in Canada, yet he made more than a dozen...
Surkhaab, Review: Where are the feathers?

There is a river in north-west Asia that is also called Surkhaab, which is easy to link to the meaning. The bird has rare type of feathers, and so, someone who has special qualities is said to be possessing 'surkhaab ke par' (surkhaab&...
