For a sampling of the narrative features not already mentioned, I offer the following:
While the premise of Another Earth suggests that it is a science-fiction film, it is really more of a character study with a sci-fi MacGuffin. Lead actress/writer Brit Marling, as Rhoda, is in virtually every shot, and yet is silent for roughly the first twenty minutes. Her ability to keep the audience engaged through facial expression and body language sets the tone for the gently unfolding plot. Alo...
The next few nights screened a number of documentaries about musicians and the impact of their music. Scheduling conflicts meant you couldn’t see all of them, so I chose the three below.
Color Me Obsessed is the rarest of rockumentaries in that it doesn’t play a single note of music from the band being featured, Minnesota’s own, The Replacements. Somehow, for this iconoclastic group, it fits. Instead, the band’s history and antics are revealed through interviews laced with humor...
Bladerunner at Fantasporto, 2012

As another Oscar season has passed us by and three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep has won yet another Academy Award for Best Actress, I think it's time to mention one of my favorite films of all time, one I must admit I watch once a month- OUT OF AFRICA (1985).
Why people so often refer to it as a ‘chick flick’ is beyond me when it is a Sydney Pollack film and one of Hollywood’s greatest canonic triumphs. Universal’s “Out of Africa”, which won the Oscar for B...

100 YEARS SINCE THE DEATH OF BRAM STOKER
Bram Stoker died 100 years ago and Fantasporto 2012 honors the creator of the gothic novel "Dracula". There were very few stories left behind by a writer that was adapted to cinema so often. Bu one of his texts became world famous. A novel and from this novel emerged one of the most distinguishable characters of all: Count Dracula. Despite not being the first vampire story ever written, it was surely the one that gave...

“...I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die...”

A film about Tenedos and passion of island. "Somewhere among the notebooks of Gideon I once found a list of diseases as yet unclassified by medical science, and among these there occurred the word islomania, which was described as a rare but by no means unknown affliction of spirit. These are people, Gideon used to say, by way of explanation, who find islands somehow irresistible. We islomanes, says Gideon, are ...

Meet Iranian – New-Zealander Faramarz Beheshti, winner of Best Non-European Independent Documentary at ÉCU 2011 for “Salam Rugby”. It is a story of women rugby players in Iran, which may sound like an anomaly, but as this documentary shows, Iranian women are more than ready to dive into the scrum if only the authorities would let them. Following the Islamic Revolution in 1979 competitive sports for women were actively discouraged and it wasn't until the social reforms of the 90s that wome...

It's been quite a journey developing the film of ZOMBIE. First I adpated Joyce Carol Oates' novella into a solo play that I performed at the New York International Film Festival. Then I performed it for extended runs twice Off-Broadway. We made a short film (19 minutes) that is an official selection at 15 film festivals so far. We've won a number of awards -- first with the play, and now with the film. For the film we've won "Best Short Film (Horro)" "Best Supporting Actor&quo...

The short film of ZOMBIE is based on the novella by Joyce Carol Oates. It's the story of a Jeffrey Dahmer-esque serial killer, and his final crime. We're an official selection in 15 film festivals so far--we're scheduled on the film festival circuit into 2012. I'm meeting with the director of the film soon, to talk about the development of the feature film. We're currently on draft five of the script. We're beginning to talk about casting as well.
