The Chinese film WINTER VACATION (Han Jia) has won the top prize, the Pardo d’oro/Golden Leopard for its director Li Hongqi at the Locarno Film Festival, which ended its 63rd edition on August 15. The award includes a 90,000 CHF cash prize. The film also won the FIPRESCI International Critics Prize, shared with fellow Chinese production KAMARAY by Xu Xin, which received a special mention.

The documentary Meat the Truth is the first major project undertaken by the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation. Meat the Truth is a high-profile documentary, presented by Marianne Thieme (leader of the Party for the Animals), which forms an addendum to earlier films that have been made about climate change. Although such films have convincingly succeeded in drawing public attention to the issue of global warming, they have repeatedly ignored one of the most important causes of climate change, namely: intensive livestock production. Meat the Truth has drawn attention to this by demonstrating that livestock farming generates more greenhouse gas emissions worldwide than all cars, lorries, trains, boats and planes added together.
The Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation chose to compile the best scientific information on climate change and livestock farming, which is presently available and to translate this for a broader audience. The film was produced by Claudine Everaert and Gertjan Zwanikken. The calculations on greenhouse gas emissions used in the film derive from and have been validated by the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the UN (FAO), the World Watch Institute, the Institute for Environmental Studies of the Free University Amsterdam and numerous other authoritative sources.
Well-known Dutch celebrities, such as Anthonie Kamerling, Georgina Verbaan, Henk Schiffmacher, Yvonne Kroonenberg, Karen van Holst Pellekaan, Wim.T.Schippers and Dolf Jansen, participated in the making of the Dutch version of this documentary, which has already been deemed better than Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth by the science editors of the quality Dutch daily newspaper, the NRC Handelsblad.
In the meantime, the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation has also produced an international version of Meat the Truth. This English language film is better tailored to an international public and uses calculations on the carbon savings that may be achieved by reducing one’s meat consumption based on American, rather than Dutch, examples.
Many well-known celebrities, such as Pamela Anderson, Bill Maher, James Cromwell, Emily Deschanel, Tony Denison, Esai Morales, Megan Blake, Debra Wilson Skelton, Elaine Hendrix, Kate Flannery, Carol Leifer, Joy Lauren, Hal Sparks, Constance Marie, Kristina Klebe, Skyler Gisondo, Graham Patrick Martin, Greg Vaughan and Touriya Haoud Vaughan, participated in the making of the international version of the film.
With this documentary, the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation hopes to make a contribution to the societal discussion about a more plant-based and thus also more animal-friendly diet and society. Moreover, the Foundation also anticipates that the film will provide a showcase for prominent scientific reports about livestock farming and climate change, which unfortunately have thus far proved inaccessible to the general public.
The world premiere of Meat the Truth was held on 10th December 2007 in the Tuschinski cinema in Amsterdam. The international version of the film premiered at London's Odeon West End Cinema in Leicester Square on 19th May 2008 and has since also had its premiere screening in the USA at the Egyptian Theatre, Hollywood, LA during the Artivist Film Festival on 3rd October 2008.

20th edition of the World Festival of Animated Film – Animafest Zagreb dedicated to short animated films is held 1-6 June in Europa, Tuškanac and Movieplex cinemas. Throughout six festival days, more than 450 short animated films from 40 countries will be screened. The Francophonie Film Festival will take place in Beijing from March 4 to March 30, 2010.
The festival will present 30 films from various members: France, Senegal, Switzerland, Quebec, Serbia, Vietnam, Tunisia, Belgium etc...
A large selection of feature films and shorts films, recent or older and popular films will be shown to the Chinese audience to let them discover the eclectic worlds of la Francophonie.
Each film will be screened in Beijing, once in the French cultural center and once in the Canadian International School of Beijing (with more than 350 seats), in their original version with Chinese subtitles. Some of them will also have French or English subtitles.
A delegation of directors and artists will be travelling to Beijing to introduce their movies, conduct master classes and meet the press:

OIF is an organisation that gathers countries and regions around the French language and/or the same values (cultural diversity, peace, democratic governance, consolidation of the State under the rule of law, environmental protection). It includes more than 56 members and about 14 observer countries, 870 millions people in all 5 continents in total.
The name of the festival, 法话影展, was created to underline that French is the main or second language of the countries showcasing their films.
A competition is organised on http://ent.cri.cn during the whole festival. The audience can vote on line for the best film of the festival. The best film will be shown one more time on March 29, at the French Cultural center.
The film festival is financed by TV5 World Asia, Sinohydro, the French Embassy in China, the Canadian Embassy in China, the Québec Bureau in China, the Wallonia – Brussels Delegation in China, and supported by the International Organisation of la Francophonie, and the Francophone embassies in China.

Note: Un film expérimental est un film qui n’est ni structuré comme une fiction narrative ni comme un documentaire. Les théoriciens du cinéma considèrent le cinéma expérimental ou d’avant-garde comme l’un des modes d’expression principaux en cinéma, au même titre que les films narratifs, les documentaires et, les avis divergent sur ce point, les films d’animation.
Comme le laisse entendre le terme, le cinéma expérimental vise souvent, mais pas obligatoirement, à tester la réaction des spectateurs envers certaines performances ou présentations que l’on ne retrouve pas dans le cinéma grand public. Ces films sont habituellement avant-gardistes et peuvent choquer ou surprendre le spectateur, intentionnellement ou non. Le cinéma d’avant-garde est souvent plus étroitement lié aux autres arts visuels et à leurs avant-gardes que les autres approches cinématographiques.

"An experimental film is a film organized neither as narrative fiction nor as non-fiction. As such, film scholars consider the experimental or avant-garde film to be one of the major modes of filmmaking, along with the narrative film, the documentary film and arguably animation ."
As the term suggests, the experimental film is often but not necessarily made to test an audience's reaction to certain performances or types of presentation not normally found in mainstream cinema. Such films are usually avant-garde and may shock or surprise their viewers, intentionally or otherwise. Of all of cinema, experimental film tends to have the closest relationship to the other visual arts and their avant-gardes.
We want to expose your 'MUFF' of visual EX-PARA-MENTAL film, video, sound, and even a little performance art to a numbed, oblivious and quite brainwashed culture of hungry fleshy pods (humans that is). So hit us with your best shot and come forth with the goods. EXPOSE YOURSELF!!!
