The Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal (RIDM) are proud to announce the awards of their 12th edition.

• CAMERA STYLO AWARD - presented by the Association des réalisateurs et réalisatrices du Québec (ARRQ):

The Sound of Insects - Record of a Mummy, by Peter Liechti.

For its ability to communicate in pure cinematic form a disturbing meditation on life and death, while delivering a powerfully sensual experience with remarkable evocative resonance, The Sound of Insects: Record of a Mummy by Peter Liechti is awarded the Camera Stylo Prize.

The members of the jury were Luc Bourdon, Catherine Martin and Serge Tréfaut.

• CAMERA AT THE READY AWARD - presented by Alternatives:

Defamation, by Yoav Shamir.

After intense deliberation, our jury awards the Caméra au Poing/Camera at the ready to the film DEFAMATION by Yoav Shamir, in recognition of his courage as an Israeli filmmaker, to explore with intelligence and humour the myths and realities of anti-Semitism, 60 years after the Holocaust, in the present-day context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The members of the jury were Lysanne Thibodeau, Erica Pomerance and John Walker.

• DOC TAPE AWARD:

Episode III - Enjoy Poverty, by Renzo Martens.

Because the film was so powerful that it changed how we look at the mediatisation of poverty in developing countries, and because its shocking impact makes clear the extent to which merchandizing human misery is obscene, Episode III: Enjoy Poverty by Renzo Martens is awarded the Doc Tape Prize.

The members of the jury were André-Line Beauparlant, Catherine Perreault-Lessard and Jean-Pierre Laurendeau.

• ECOCAMERA AWARD - presented by Télé-Québec:

Les damnés de la mer, by Jawad Rhalib.

The EcoCamera Grand Prize goes to Les damnés de la mer by Jawad Rhalib, whose film is remarkable for its powerful characters, the beauty of its images and its environmental import.

The jury awards an Honourable Mention to H2Oil by Shannon Walsh, which it called "a necessary film and a call to action".

The members of the jury were Raymond Lemieux, Dorothy Hénaut and Jean-Guy Vaillancourt.

• FIRST CAMERA AWARD - presented by VOX:

Stalags: Holocaust and Pornography in Israel, by Ari Libsker.

Because it is a film launched with a deceptively frivolous tone but which soon evidences its cinematic mastery, all the more laudable for the complex and sensitive subject it tackles, Stalags: Holocaust and Pornography in Israel de Ari Libsker is awarded the First Camera Award presented by Vox.

The members of the jury were René Roberge, Tom Waugh and Monica Haim.

• EDITING AWARD:

October Country, by Michael Palmieri and Donal Mosher.

For its multi-layered readings delivered with apparent simplicity and for its skill in evoking connections and establishing a metaphoric space without straying from the lived reality of its characters, October Country is awarded the Editing Prize.

The members of the jury were Bruno Baillargeon, Louise Dugal and Catherine Legault.

• IMAGE AWARD:

War + love in Kaboul, by Helga Reidemeister.

Beginning with a forbidden love story, the camera communicates with elegance and sensitivity an Afghan drama in all its complexity. For outstanding photography that commands enormous emotional engagement, War and Love in Kabul is awarded the Image Prize.

The jury awards an Honourable Mention to Plomb durci by Stefano Savona.

The members of the jury were Philippe Lavalette, Marielle Nitoslawska and Stéphane Thibault.

• CINÉMATHÈQUE QUÉBÉCOISE AWARD FOR BEST FILM FROM QUEBEC/CANADA:

Last Train Home, by Lixin Fan.

Because the undertaking was phenomenal and the relationship of individual lives to universal experience is remarkable, and because the magnificent image and sound work was achieved under extreme conditions, LAST TRAIN HOME is awarded the Cinémathèque Québécoise Prize for Best Film from Quebec / Canada.

The members of the jury were Sophie Deraspe, Mario Fortin and Jean Lefebvre.

• QUEBEC/CANADA BEST HOPE AWARD PRESENTED BY THE NFB(PROGRAMME ACIC-Canada):

Kitakinan - Notre territoire à tout le monde, by Serge Bordeleau.

History has unfolded, not always for the best, but the land still obeys the same law: we have to live together. Because it is an ethnographic film that becomes very political, Kitakinan - Notre territoire à tout le monde is awarded the Quebec / Canada Best Hope Award presented by the National Film Board   of Canada (programme ACIC-Canada).

The members of the jury were René Roberge, Monica Haim and Tom Waugh.

• AUDIENCE AWARD - presented by Canal D

La dérive douce d'un enfant de Petit-Goâve, by Pedro Ruiz.
