This year at the open of the 2nd annual Aruba Film Festival (AIFF), one of the films to kick off the festival was the acclaimed Goya award winning film THE LIFE OF FISH (Chile, 2011) by the brilliant director Matias Bize. This was Chile’s 2011 Oscar Entry film and since its world premier in at Venice Film Festival I have seen the film several times now and it remains my favorite indie film of the year. Matias Bize's 'LA VIDA DE LOS PECES' (The Life of Fish) is so minimalist and yet such a hear...

Jozko RutarBulgarian cinephiles know well the name of Jozko Rutar, the producer of Silent Sonata (A.K.A. Circus Fantasticus) from another cult Slovenian film, Jan Cvitkovic’ Gravehopping (2005).
Director Janez Burger’s Silent Sonata is
unique piece of cinema art, a kaleidoscope of reminiscent images,
reminding of Fellini’s aesthetic, of Tarkovski to a certain degree and
even to Hodorovski. It is a film essay on war and survival; a film with
no dialogue, but not a silent movi...

CANNES, France — A French director's clever silent movie about a
fallen Hollywood silent-movie star came out of nowhere on Sunday to
become a strong contender for the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
"The
Artist" by Michel Hazanavicius won strong applause -- and more than a
few laughs -- from festival goers who'd been wondering if Cannes this
year was ever going to be about more than dysfunctional families and
sexual deviancy.

I have performed with this classic horror/fantasy film--the best version of the Golem legend ever made--in our 20 countries round the world since debuting my live score (in collaboration with composer Walter Horn) at the Museum of th Moving Image in Astoria NY in 1989. The film concerns the actual historical Rabbi Jehudah Loew, who Jewish legend has it fashioned a man out of clay and brought him to life through cabbalistic magic to protect the Jewish Community of 16th century Prague from annihilation. A stunningly beautiful, little seen film!
Director: Eric ATLAN.
