2011 My Sundance film festival

user
This is an overview of my 2011 Sundance experience  For Europeans, heading to a remote mining town now ski resort and festival headquarters in Park City, Utah, tucked away in the Wasatch mountains outside of Salt Lake City, it's no simple journey. It entails careful planning several months in advance, serious budgetary calculation to secure a bed in those expensive shared- condos, and blocking extra time to your return schedule as flipping time zones wrecks havoc with your metabolism a...

Berlinale Panorama 2011 with Renowned Directors, Three Films on India and Many New Discoveries

user
Now that the programme is almost complete it can be said that in the aftermath of the financial crisis truly independent cinema is at an advantage. The themes of many first films are daring and hence inspiring, as seen in the work of Israeli filmmaker Michal Aviad who, set against the backdrop of the interminable Palestinian-Israeli conflict, has her protagonists work through traumas in Lo Roim Alaich (Invisible), or with French director Céline Sciamma whose Tomboy portrays the coming of age of...

Jameson CineFest - Miskolc International Film Festival

The flourishing Jameson CineFest will celebrate its 8th edition in September 2011, housing in a new cultural complex House of Arts. Each year, after a careful pre-selection, the top 15-20 features and 40-50 shorts, documentaries and animation films have the opportunity to compete in the official program. Most of the films came from Central Europe, from the US and Germany, but we received films from Indonesia to South America. Jameson CineFest provides an unique look into young international cinema's landscape, screening the best flicks from all over the world.

Many attractive supplementary programs, exhibitions, concerts, film history workshops, roundtable discussions will accompany the nightly screenings. Our CineClassics series started in 2010: explore with us Hungary's exceptionally rich film heritage: Oscar winner British screenwriter Emeric Pressburger was born in Miskolc, legendary founder of Paramount PicturesAdolph Zukor in the nearby village Ricse, 20th Century-Fox founder William Fox in Tolcsva, in the heart of the renowned Tokaj wine region, just to name a few.  The 2009 conference dedicated to Emeric Pressburger (with the participation of his Oscar winner grandson Kevin Macdonald), and the 2010 workshop about Zoltan Korda was a true gem.

Jameson CineFest is one of the most attractive festivals of Central Europe, where our guests can get know the fresh cavalcade of world cinema, the hidden treasures of film history, fine food and drinks, concerts and parties - with true Hungarian hospitality.

See you in Miskolc in September 2011!

The French Touch At The Miami Film Festival

Friday, March 7---------Films from France have traditionally been among the strongest and most loved at the Miami International Film Festival. Not only does Miami have within its borders a large French expatriate community, but immigrants from French-speaking Africa and the Americas round out the French language contingent in this multi-cultural town. Even for those not fluent in “la langue,” French cinema has been the most popular non-English film product for more than 70 years in the Unit...

Movie Review: THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND

user
Every time Forest Whitaker showed up on a talk show to hock his new film "The Last King of Scotland", I felt an unease in the pit of my stomach.  Every clip shown of the film throughout this ever-raging fire of awards season has been a full assault display of Whitaker in screaming pipes mode.  I came to expect that this was the only note the performance would deliver; one of excessive volume and fury-induced spittle. As it turns out, there's a reason why Whitaker has been generati...
