Saturday/Sunday, October 21/22-----THE ARCHITECT is a sophisticated urban drama about a Chicago architect (played by Anthony LaPaglia) confronted by an outspoken female activist (Viola Davis) living in a dangerous housing project of his design. LaPaglia plays Leo Waters, an idealistic architect and patriarch of an affluent, suburban Chicago family. Viola Davis is Tonya Neeley, a pragmatic activist who is trying to keep her family together while living in one of the city’s most drug and crime...
Hip Hop Artist Kazi Performs
Saturday, October 21---As the Turks and Caicos International Film Festival, an event devoted to the relationship between film and music, moves into its final stanza, one of the relevatory aspects of the event has been the remarkably vibrant rainbow of contemporary black music. While rap, hip hop and rhythm and blues (or a mix of all of the above) is clearly the dominant trend, black artists continue to expand the form of jazz, reggae, singer-songwriter and rock musi...

At 6:30pm, I found myself trekking through the pleasantly desolate industrial fringes of SOHO in search of Don Hill’s. The graffiti scribbled, black brick exterior of the bar combined with the dark, skull embossed fashion of a few nicotine huffing early arrivals to inspire visions of death metal to dance in my head. But the interior of the bar was more campy than tough or spooky, with “sailor tattoo” themed wallpaper and glowing gargoyle masks on the wall creating an ambience somewhere b...
Friday, October 20----It is a rather unusual career move for a film distributor to transition from buying and selling films to actually making them, but that is exactly what Jeff Lipsky has done. After co-founding October Films (which was bought out by Universal Pictures and eventually morphed into Focus Features) and Lot 47 Films, releasing indie and international gems such as Lars Von Trier's BREAKING THE WAVES, Mike Leigh's SECRETS AND LIES, David Lynch's LOST HIGHWAY, Michael Cuesta's L.I....
Friday, October 20----The jurors at the Turks and Caicos International Film Festival don't have much time to relax on the beach. They are too busy screening the films in competition, and deliberating in time for Saturday evening's Awards Gala at the swanky Palms Resort on beautiful Grace Bay.
The Festival will be honoring a number of categories with the Sal Del Mar Awards. The Awards have been named for the "salt of the sea", which is this island nation's largest export product. The hard-wor...

Wednesday, October 18----Rupert Grint (of HARRY POTTER fame) stars as a shy teenage boy in this comedic coming-of-age drama reminiscent of the 1970s cult hit HAROLD AND MAUDE. Oscar-nominated actress Laura Linney, one of our finest film stars, gives another terrific performance as the boy's domineering mother, who continues to exert an influence on him as a way of holding on to him. The boy learns independence and a sense of self when he begins to work for a retired actress, played by Oscar n...

The first Rome International Film Festival didn't just draw out the film fans. In town for a long weekend of events were international film business delegates attending the market section of the festival. Players from far and wide had a mostly positive response to the number of initiatives at the festival, which included a popular buyers' terrace at the Bernini Hotel and a so-called business street at the Excelsior Hotel on the Via Veneto.
"I had a meeting arranged with one producer and met fort...

Festival Closing Night Gala
Saturday, October 14---The 44th edition of the New York Film Festival is drawing to a close, but not without one more weekend of film excitement and diversity. Saturday sees repeat screenings of two of the Festival's most anticipated and debated films, Sofia Coppola's post-modern take on the French Revolution, MARIE ANTOINETTE, and Emmanuel Bordieu's homo-erotic POISON FRIENDS.
Another film having its final screening on Saturday is the Turkish drama CLIMATES by d...
Saturday, October 14----Aside from all the films, the parties, the music concerts and other special events, the Woodstock Film Festival offers local filmmakers and visiting film talents an intensive education on all aspects of the filmmaking and distribution process through an exhaustive series of professional seminars. Drawing mainly on film executives, film critics and film mavens from Manhattan (only 100 miles to the south), the Festival offers a rare opportunity to get the lowdown on the s...
Saturday, October 14----One of the more unusual and highly anticipated programs of the Woodstock Film Festival will be tonight's special event, THE MITCH SHOW, a retrospective of comedic short films spanning the oeuvre of Hollywood-based filmmaker Mitchell Rose. The program includes several audience-participation segments, humorous performance pieces and short comic gems by this professional wisenheimer.
Highlights of the program include MODERN DAYDREAMS, a suite of four Chaplinesque films t...
Friday, October 13----With the fall foliage in full regalia, the town of Woodstock, nestled in the Catskill Mountains region of New York State, is in full flower (of reds, oranges and greens). The Woodstock Film Festival, which opened last evening, adds even more color as it unspools a group of provocative films.
Friday highlights have included the North American Premiere of the Canadian drama STEEL TOES, a provocative legal drama starring Academy Award nominee David Straithairn, who plays a ...

LITTLE CHILDREN
Series: The 44th New York Film Festival [Sept 29 - Oct 15 2006]
Director: Todd Field , Country: USA, Release: 2006, Runtime: 136
First with In the Bedroom and now with his haunting, sensual adaptation of Tom Perrotta’s novel, Todd Field proves himself to be one of the most perceptive and provocative filmmakers on the American scene. The restless adults in this unnervingly sexy, faintly menacing, and coolly wise drama who look after their kids (in settings of deceptive innocence), turn out to be children themselves, all too apt to stray off the playground path in their hunger for love, sex, and a temporary freedom from responsibilities.

MAFIOSO
Series: The 44th New York Film Festival [Sept 29 - Oct 15 2006]
Director: Alberto Lattuada, Country: Italy, Release: 1962, Runtime: 99
A long-lost comic classic from the Golden Age of Italian cinema, lovingly restored to its original glory. The incomparable Alberto Sordi gives one of his finest performances as Antonio Badalamenti, a punctilious factory supervisor in Northern Italy who takes his blonde wife (Norma Bengell) and their two adorable children to meet his family in Sicily. As vast meals are consumed and suspicious looks exchanged, Antonio sinks back into the rhythms and customs familiar from childhood. But then local bigwig Don Vincenzo (Ugo Attanasio) and his “people
