A new film master has been born
Joko Anwar's horror noir (or whatever people woul like to call it) was a big surprise at various film festivals two years ago. Sight & Sound named it one of best films of 2007. But the movie still went unnoticed by a wider audience. With The Forbidden Door, the world witnessed the born of a new film master. Highly praised by critics, the film is a delightful psychological thriller which boasts some of the most arresting visuals with an atmosphere that makes you feel that the actors are breathing down your neck. The story unfolds like a spiraling staircase (which seemingly has become Joko Anwar's trademark).
I am very lucky to be able to see this at the Neuchatel Fantastic Film Festival this year. I hope some distributors outside its home country Indonesia will soon pick up this excellent, entertaining film for wider audience to see.
