Highlights from the Tarifa African Film Festival
The FESTIVAL DE CINE AFRICANO DE TARIFA (FCAT - Tarifa African Film Festival), one of the biggest African film festivals in Europe, is about to start its seventh edition on May 21st in Tarifa, the closest Spanish town to Africa on the Andalusian coasts of the Strait of Gibraltar (http://www.fcat.es/).
This year the FCAT presents, from 21st to 29th May:
- 113 movies from 36 countries, out of which 33 films are national premieres in competition
- dozens of respected filmmakers and producers from Europe and Africa including legendary director Idrissa Ouedraogo
- €48,500 in prize money through 8 different awards
The festival programme focuses in 10 different sections on:
- African feature length fiction films, short films, documentaries, animation films and African film classics
- 50th anniversary of African independencies
- film production of Nigerian Nollywood, which is globally the second biggest after Bollywood
- The African diaspora in Cuba
- Idrissa Ouedraogo auteur retrospective
- African music and dance
This year Tarifa's festival expands its impact straight to Africa by screening films paralelly in the areas around Tarifa and Moroccan Tangier, as both regions are only 14 km apart from one another across the Strait of Gibraltar.
