Quentin Tarantino will open the Zabaltegi-Pearls section with Inglourious Basterds

Also coming are new films by Woody Allen, Ang Lee, Jim Jarmusch, Bahman Ghobadi, Bong Joon-ho and Johnnie To, among other directors.

North American director Quentin Tarantino will open the Zabaltegi-Pearls section with his latest movie.

Inglourious Basterds. This film, winner of the Best Actor Award for Christoph Waltz at Cannes, will be screened on the first day of the 57th edition on Friday, 18 September.

Zabaltegi-Pearls, the showcase for movies feted at the big international festivals but not yet released in Spain, will also feature other Cannes award-winners including Un prophète by Jacques Audiard, recipient of the Jury Grand Prix; and Kasi az Gorbehaye irani khabar nadareh (No One Knows About Persian Cats), from the two-time Golden Shell winner, Bahman Ghobadi, who bagged Special Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard with this movie.

San Sebastian will also see the screening of some of the season's major movies presented in the Cannes Official Selection, such as Ang Lee's Woodstock; Vengeance, by Johnnie To, contemporary thriller's prolific maestro; Mother, from the Korean director Bong Joon-ho, who has competed twice before at San Sebastian, and Yuki & Nina, by Nobuhiro Suwa and Hippolyte Girardot, screened to great critical acclaim at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes.

Precious, the big hit at Sundance Festival, winner of the Special Jury Prize, Best Actress for Mo'Nique and Audience Award, will also be screened in Zabaltegi-Pearls. This movie, initially presented at Sundance with the title of Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire and later at Cannes as Precious, is directed by Lee Daniels, who already competed in the Zabaltegi-New Directors section of San Sebastian Festival with his first film, Shadowboxer (2005).

Another Sundance winner, having garnered Best Director and Best Screenwriter in the World Cinema section with Five Minutes of Heaven, this work looks at the victims of terrorism in Ireland from the reconciliation angle and carries the signature of Olivier Hirschbiegel, director of Der Untergang (Downfall).

Woody Allen also returns to San Sebastian with his new comedy, Whatever Works, opening film of the Tribeca Festival marking his return to New York after four films shot in Europe, including Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Another of the great directors of contemporary cinema in the US, Jim Jarmusch, will bring us The Limits of Control, shot in Madrid.
