Most horror films deal with the fully dead or not fully dead: the undead. The dead haunt you in new homes, with a past, or castles/mansions, located far from civilisations. The undead could be Mummies who scare both Mummies and Daddies, and even children though most such films carry a For Adults Only certification. Some are the devil’s agents, while others are souls who died with unfulfilled desires. Insidious, which is a sequel to Insidious: The Red Door (2023), and the sixth in the series, deals with Couriers, Travellers and the Further. Look no farther. Being in the Further is a stage between being completely dead and incompletely alive. They are led by a male Further called Cyrus, and they try to target a dentist, Gemma, who has a young daughter called Maya, and a boy-friend Nick, who is a cop, neighbours named Sullivans, and a neighbourly dog named Radar.
Obviously, the cop cannot arrest (stop) or hand-cuff these critters, and it takes another undead to help the victims fight a whole horde of Furthers. The couriers are not the delivery boys and girls, who reach you with papers, gifts or food. They are what are better defined as mediums. Gemma is one such Courier. Likewise, the Travellers are not the genus that use buses, cycles, trains, cars, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, aeroplanes, helicopters, boats, ships, etc. They travel the distance between the living and those who have moved on. Why are they bent on making life miserable for the dentist and her neighbours? Because the dentist can help bring Cyrus and his CyRussians come back to life. When life is an option, who wants to be dead? Dreams and nightmares haunt Gemma and Maya. A deceased elderly woman named Elise appears to them through a tattoo-artiste named Claire, and shows Gemma a way to deal with Cyrus and his entire virus. And a series of formulaic scenes and tropes follow.
A rank amateurish attempt, which is lack-lustre and downright boring, the film has so many characters that they are likely to outnumber viewers in theatres. Logic is at a heavy discount and the jump scares will scare only the dim-witted. Created by director Jacob Chase and the writing ‘skills’ of David Leslie, Johnson-McGoldrick and Leigh Whannell, who seem to be so scared of horror that they have made a horror film which has little or no horror. Have they used ghost writers? In the cast are Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Sam Spruell, Island Austin, Laura Gordon, Joshua Lopez, Robina Beard, Susan Grey and Joseph Bishara, who have to live the 106 minutes of this pretentious, Insidious, dead film, some of them as humans, others as Furthers. Of them, Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea and Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Lin Shaye reprise their roles from previous Insidious, which was released one whole year after its announced release date, grossed 1/6th of its budget. Not surprising. Whatever and howsoever be the film, there will always be a few takers.
