The Spanish film "Out of Control: Reports on the Atomic Bomb" by Beatriz Caravaggio received the award for "Best Experimental Documentary" of the 15th International Uranium Film Festival of Rio de Janeiro, 2026. From May 21st to 30th, 2026, the 15th International Uranium Film Festival of Rio screened at the Cinematheque of the renowned Museum of Modern Art (MAM Rio) 31 „atomic“ films from 18 countries addressing all nuclear issues.

JURY STATEMENT

Through its impressive four-screen montage of atomic explosions from around the world, creating a work of intense sensory experience that bombards the viewer's perception and draws attention to the absurdity of the 20th-century arms race. The film is reminiscent of Peter Greenaway's experimental masterpiece *Atomic Bombs on the Planet Earth*. OUT OF CONTROL. REPORTS ON THE ATOMIC BOMB Out of Control Poster

Spain, 2023, Director and Producer: Beatriz Caravaggio, Experimental Documentary, English with Portuguese subtitles, 50 min. Synopsis: The film is based on declassified archival material from nuclear-armed governments, the film explores the more than 2,000 nuclear tests conducted since the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The precision and control of these atomic tests have resulted in enormous arsenals of weapons of mass destruction, a latent existential threat to life on Earth, the consequence of an unstoppable arms race. Out of Control takes an approach that stands out from the numerous other works produced on atomic weapons and their creators. With its minimalist language that avoids both explicitly moralizing and criticizing or rejecting the cognitive pillars of science, this is a piece of modern filmmaking of enduring cultural significance and widespread relevance to other cases. The documentary was commissioned by the BBVA Foundation. The BBVA Foundation expresses the corporate social responsibility of the Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) Group.

Beatriz Caravaggio

Born in Spain, she graduated in English and German Philology from the University of Oviedo. In Madrid, Beatriz studied music and cinematography. The focus of her artistic and professional work is primarily on non-fiction film and video art. She has participated in national and international film festivals, such as the Montreal Film Festival, the Bogotá Film Festival and the Huelva Ibero-American Film Festival. At the same time, her works have been exhibited in museums and art galleries, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao; the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona; the Reina Sofia National Museum in Madrid; the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio and the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Canada.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

For 15 years the International Uranium Film Festival (IUFF) raises awareness about the risks of atomic power and promotes nuclear disarmament with independent films and panels of experts around the globe. In October 2024, Hollywood's MovieMaker Magazine named it one of the "25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World 2024". And in 2025, the festival's founders, Márcia Gomes de Oliveira and Norbert Suchanek, received the prestigious "Nuclear-Free Future Award" in New York City in the category education. The Uranium Film Festival especially in Rio focuses very much on the young generation.
