The Power of A Name: Marie Madeleine

Gessica Généus’s second Feature Film Marie Madeleine is a gripping deep-dive into the radical duality of what it means to live as an outcast in Jacmel, Haiti. Généus plays the main character Marie Madeleine who, while working as a prostitute, meets the secretive pastor’s son who lives across the street from the sex club she works at. 

As their relationship deepens while religious pressures threaten the two characters, they question how to live their lives truthfully, reconcile the ways in which they’re shaped from their circumstances, and consider the name Marie Madeleine: to the pastor’s son an honorary biblical title, and to herself the prosperous yet tragic story of her trafficked grandmother, for whom she was named after.

In discussing their dramatically different lives, the friends realize profound truths about themself and the other, discover how to live in an increasingly bold and authentic way, and question their identities in ways that their society would not allow them to do alone. 

A carnival scene at the end of the film displays colors representative of the LGBTQ+ flag, a revelation for characters previously bound by strict religious law. However, as passion ensues and freedom is realized, accusations spread and life halts at the left hand of the angered pastor.

Marie Madeleine is a poignant display of the powers that play when communities meet each other even amongst mutually held hatred. It is a display of the unwavering friendship and the loyalty that stems from resistance. With its dedication to the authentic display of Haitian society, the film serves as a stinging reminder to audiences of the intense prejudices that still plague much of the world.

Gessica Généus’s Marie Madeleine was an impressive directorial feat that rings true with the director’s heartfelt devotion to her home country, Haiti. The film premiered to a number of Haitian citizens who reportedly commented on the film’s accuracy in its display of Haitian society, its spiritual and social cultures, and the overall atmosphere.
