In 1949, Nobel prize-winning author Thomas Mann returned to Germany for the first time since World War II, joined by his daughter. Driving a black Buick, the pair set out on an emotional journey through the country they had escaped sixteen years earlier after the rise of the Nazi regime. Traveling from American-occupied Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar, they witnessed a devastated Germany already divided by the growing tensions of the Cold War.

Following Ida and the Cold War, Pawel Pawlikowski once again delves into the emotional and moral fractures of postwar Europe, exploring themes of identity, guilt, family, and love.
