CATANE Opens SEEfest 2026 with Whimsy, Wit, and Quiet Defiance

CATANE, Romanian filmmaker Ioana Mischie’s inventive feature debut, opened SEEfest 2026 with a distinctive blend of whimsy and social insight at the Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills. Set in a remote Romanian village, the film unfolds like a modern-day fairytale, pairing deadpan humor with a quietly pointed critique of systemic corruption. Mischie’s playful, Wes Anderson–esque sensibility gives the story a stylized charm, while the narrative’s focus on collective ingenuity and resilience adds emotional depth. As villagers confront the threat of exposure, what emerges is less a tale of deception than a poetic reflection on survival and solidarity.

The opening night drew a distinguished crowd, including Bulgarian-American actress and entertainer Irina Maleeva, Consuls General of Romania, Bulgaria, and Sweden, Academy Award–winning director Arnold Schwartzman and his wife Isolde, along with jury members, actors, media, and industry professionals—underscoring the festival’s international prestige and cultural reach.

As an opening night selection, CATANE perfectly encapsulates SEEfest’s mission—spotlighting diverse voices from South and Eastern Europe while celebrating stories that balance cultural specificity with universal relevance. Under the leadership of Vera Mijojlić, SEEfest continues to position itself as a vital platform for cross-cultural dialogue, bringing nuanced, often underrepresented perspectives to Los Angeles audiences with both elegance and heart.

SEEfest runs through May 6th. For the full program line up please visit: https://seefest2026.eventive.org/films
