‘Los Domingos’ Leads 40th Goya Awards with Five Wins

Los Domingos, the family drama directed by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, was the big winner at the 40th Goya Awards, held in Barcelona, taking five prizes including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

The film, which explores the upheaval within a family after a teenage girl announces her decision to become a cloistered nun, also earned acting awards for Patricia López Arnaiz (Best Leading Actress) and Nagore Aranburu (Best Supporting Actress). Ruiz de Azúa used her acceptance speech to call for engagement against injustice and highlighted the historic gender imbalance in the Best Director category.

Sharing the spotlight was Sirat, Spain’s Oscar submission, which won six technical awards, including Original Score for Kangding Ray, Cinematography and Editing.

Among other major winners, José Ramón Soroiz took Best Leading Actor for Maspalomas, while Eva Libertad won Best New Director for Sorda, which collected three awards overall.

The ceremony, hosted by Rigoberta Bandini and Luis Tosar, marked four decades of the Spanish Film Academy. Academy president Fernando Méndez-Leite described Spanish cinema as being “in excellent health.”

Veteran filmmaker Gonzalo Suárez received the Honorary Goya, while Susan Sarandon was presented with the International Goya in recognition of her artistic career and civic commitment.
