Retratos del Apocalipsis - Nicanor Loreti, Fabian Forte, Luca Castello- 75’(Argentina) - fantástico, horror, sobrenatural

Three directors joined forces to bring to life four fantastic horror stories showcasing the quality of Argentine cinema. The first, “Asesinato en la Escena del Crime”, shows how a guilty conscience can lead a detective to make very bad decisions. The second, “Ratas”, delves into the human drama of a family in which the elderly mother-in-law imagines she has seen a rat inside the house while, outside, a virus is infecting everyone. The third story, “Rubi”, shows the planning for the arrival of a baby when outside civilization is dying. The fourth story, “Rey de los Condenados”, mixes the drama of a father who has lost a child and of a being who wants to return to the human world. Selected by the Mar del Plata Festival.

The Last Assassins- James Anthony Usas - 84’ (EUA) - survival, science-fiction

The world lives in a permanent winter and is shrouded in a deadly fog. In the distant future, Nobel must take a young girl to her aunt, whom she has never met, after her father has been killed. He has sworn to protect the members of that family, and few remain. When they arrive at an abandoned laboratory, holograms tell the family's story. But can the digital world become physical? The young woman may be the solution. This is the director’s first feature, following the shorts “House of the Gathering” (2011) and “Deliveries” (2010).

Don’t Leave the Kids Alone /No Dejes los Niños Solos- Emilio Portes -98’ (Mex) - horror

On a stormy night with power cuts, a mother has to leave her two young children alone in their new house. With complete freedom to rummage through the unopened boxes, some belonging to the previous owner, the children do everything their mother told them not to do. But they are not alone. Chaos follows. An example of the best Mexican horror cinema, playing with the viewer's mind with situations common among siblings and with an intensity that will lead everyone to chaos. The director is known for ‘Pastorella’, which won three Ariel Awards in 2012.

Under Your Feet Cristian Bernard- 95’ (Esp) - feitiçaria, horror

A woman and her two children move into a flat in a luxury building. Separated from her husband, Isabel and her children are soon disturbed by the  disconcerting voices coming from the floor below. And although they know there are elderly women living downstairs, nothing seems to stop the disturbance they bring to their family. A woman who lived on the same floor warns Isabel: she must flee. A modern version of Hansel and Gretel. 
Starring Maribel Verdú (“Pan's Labyrinth” and “Y Tu Mama También”). This is the director's sixth feature film. Selected for the Tallinn Film Festival.

Scared to Death Paul Boyd- 98’ (EUA) - horror sobrenatural, comédia

A house, empty for 70 years, is visited to be the setting for the filming of a horror film about a night of spiritualism. And what better way to introduce the actors in the film to the spiritual theme than a realistic séance inside the house? Especially since the person showing them around the house (formerly an orphanage) is a medium who would like to meet the film's protagonist, the legendary The Grog (a remarkable performance by Kurt Deimer, who also wrote the music, as in “Hellbilly Hollow”, also screened this year). But not everything goes as planned. Fun and innovative, this supernatural horror comedy was selected for London's FrightFest. Director Paul Boyd won the Best Film Award at the New York Latino Film Fest.

Post Truth- Alkan Avcioglu- 103’ - Turquia - documentário digital, futuro, AI

Spoken in English, this is the first feature-length documentary film entirely generated with Artificial Intelligence. It explores our relationship with technology and how we are now in the age of algorithms. Everything we see and appreciate, whether true or not, ends up being imposed on us by camouflaged manipulation and an overload of images and information that dominate all our choices. It also talks about a top-secret meeting in 2007 in California, where humanity's top decision-makers gave structure to the future world they dreamed of. A film that is absolutely essential viewing and which opens our eyes to the reality of today and tomorrow. This is the director's first feature film, reminiscent of Geoffrey Reggio's famous ‘Koyaaniskatsi’ (1982) he pays tribute to. This film has already won the Audience Award at the Frontdoc Film Festival.

After the colonizing of the Spanish, the Americans came to the Philippines. However, atrocities against the population sparked a revolt. In a village of  women, whose men had already died in the war, an enigmatic woman appeared, whom they decided to call Sisa. Relations with the American troops in the area with the American citizens seem peaceful. And everything apparently is heading towards war when glimpses of peace appear. But can  oppressed peoples forget revenge? With the fabulous Hilda Koronel in the lead role. Director Robles Lana is well known in Fantasporto, where he presented ‘About Us but not About Us’ in 2022, and has already won more than 40 international awards. 21.30

Gaua- Paul Urkijo Alijo- 92’ (Esp) - horror, feitiçaria

Kattalin is a young woman married to a violent husband who lives in a rural area dominated by fear of forest creatures, God, and the Inquisition.
Wanting to escape her husband, she finds herself involved with three women who tell her horror stories, from the priest who hunts a hare, to the possessed friend, to the monster in the woods. Ancestral stories of isolated peoples with hard lives, fearful in their relationship with nature. An excellent example of the quality of Spanish cinema, especially in terms of direction, cinematography and the performance of the lead actress, Yune Nogueiras. Director Paul Urkijo is one of Fantasporto's discoveries with the short films ‘Dar Dar’ (2020) and ‘El Bosque Negro’ (2015) and has already won 11 international awards.
