The inaugural LAGFF-doc, co-sponsored by LMU’s Department of Classics and Archaeology, closed in a celebratory mood with an awards ceremony hosted by Vivianne Linou at the Broccoli Theater, followed by a reception at the Collins Center, catered by PETROS, wines by AVRA, soft drinks by Los Angeles Greek Market (LAGMA).
The big winners of the night were Siamak Etemadi’s THE STUFF WE ARE MADE OF, a rare look into disability and intimacy, which won the Best Feature Documentary Orpheus Award; and Yorgos Avgeropoulos’ MANKIND’S FOLLY, a story of human greed and climate change, which turned out to be a festival favorite garnering the first LMU Social Justice Award and the Audience Orpheus Award. Casey Beck’s CHANGE MAKERS, about two young men who set out to clean the Greek seas from plastic, got the Best Short Documentary Orpheus Award.
Other distinctions included honorable mentions for the features LO by Thanassis Vasiliou; WAVES WON’T STOP by Ioannis Papaloizou; the shorts REQUIEM IN SALT by Sylvia Nicolaides and Nicolas Iordanou; and MY IOANNINA ODYSSEY by Gary Glassman and Manya Branham Glassman, which also received an Orpheus Audience Award.
In collaboration with Greek Documentary Association (Hellasdoc), LAGFF-doc held its first webinar, Understanding American Demand for Mediterranean Narratives, with local and international participants.
