À propos

In Place of War is an organisation that empowers, mobilises and connects artists and creative communities living in sites of war, revolution and conflict. Working with artists, producers, researchers and cultural activists, we build powerful networks, create social change through creativity and demonstrate the value of the arts to public space, public life and public debate.

In 2016, IPOW launches its first ever film programme, CREATE Film Festival, a series of events and screenings that celebrate and explore the multiple roles that creativity can play in generating positive social change in sites of conflict and post-conflict.

Screenings will focus on four broad themes:

WOMEN IN CONFLICT

KURDISTAN

THE CONGO

URBAN CULTURE AND MUSIC IN THE NEIGHBOURHOODS OF LATIN AMERICA

In Place of War are particularly looking for films made by filmmakers who have themselves a first-hand understanding of the conflicts which they discuss in their work. We are open to a range of different approaches: documentaries and dramas, shorts and features, citizen journalism and grass-roots reportage. We are looking for films of exceptional quality, but don’t believe that this has to mean only established filmmakers can apply – we welcome young and emerging artists too.

Festival presentation

When communities are caught in the depths of conflict and oppression, and survival becomes part of everyday life, why do people continue to create? When arms and air raids, ceasefires and aid fail to bring an end to such situations, what can art offer and what can it change?

CREATE Film Festival seeks to examine and explore the issue of creativity in sites of conflict; to offer a unique opportunity to see not only the different ways in which creativity can fuel change, but the truly exceptional talent that exists in some of the world’s most challenging contexts, where people have to think creatively about everything in order to survive.

Creativity as resistance; as understanding; as peace building; as voice; as messenger; as an alternative. Film In Place of War.
