Ontario Screen Creator’s Conference (OSCC) presents a live, in-person, and virtual conversation with Beans producer Anne-Marie Gelinas and co-writer, executive producer Meredith Vuchnich. Additionally, a pre-recorded interview with director and co-writer Tracey Deer and Vuchnich will be included in this event.
Beans is a coming-of-age story, inspired by co-writer/director Tracey Deer’s own experience as a 12-year-old Mohawk girl who had to grow up fast during the 1990 Oka Crisis, a 78-day armed stand-off between the Quebec/Canadian governments and the Mohawk who were peacefully protesting a golf course expansion that would desecrate their burial ground.
Beans bowed at TIFF 2020 and went on to achieve Berlin’s Generation Kplus Crystal Bear for best film, the Canadian Screen Award for Best Motion Picture and Best First Feature, TIFF Emerging Talent Award (Deer), TIFF’s Canada Top Ten, second runner-up for TIFF People’s Choice Award, VIFF’s Best Canadian Film, VFCC’s One to Watch (actor Kiawentiio), DGC Discovery Award, and the feature film WGC Screenwriting Award.
ABOUT TRACEY DEER:
Mohawk filmmaker Tracey Deer led the acclaimed dramedy MOHAWK GIRLS to five award-winning seasons as its co-creator, director, and co-showrunner. She received four consecutive Canadian Screen Award nominations for Best Direction in a Comedy Series for MOHAWK GIRLS, and she has been honoured at TIFF with the Birks Diamond Tribute Award. She recently returned from Los Angeles, where she was a writing co-EP on the Netflix/CBC series Anne with an E. She’s currently working on INNER CITY GIRL, a feature about Aboriginal gang life, with Original Pictures. Tracey’s work has been honoured with two Gemini Awards and numerous awards from multiple film festivals, including Hot Docs. She has worked with the CBC, the National Film Board, and numerous independent production companies throughout Canada in both documentary and fiction. Tracey chairs the Board of Directors of Women in View, a non-profit that promotes greater diversity and gender parity in Canadian media. She has mentored emerging talent as leader of the Director Training Program at the imagineNATIVE Film & Media Arts Festival, as a guest at the National Screen Institute (NSI) New Indigenous Voices Program, and as mentor at NSI’s new IndigiDocs training course

Anne-Marie Gélinas, founder of EMAfilms, has produced internationally recognized films that span the globe and appeal to international audiences. Her distinctive and diverse filmography includes award-winning drama (BEANS: TIFF, BERLINALE-CRYSTAL BEAR, CSA’S BEST MOTION PICTURE), documentary (CHIENNE DE VIE: HOT DOCS), and buzzy genre films (SLAXX: STIGES, FRIGHTFEST, TURBO KID: SUNDANCE, SXSW).
ABOUT MEREDITH VUCHNICH:
Meredith Vuchnich is an award-winning Canadian screenwriter for film and TV. Her writing for television includes one-hour dramas (Regenesis, Remedy, Godiva’s, REMEDY, GODIVA’S) and half-hour dramatic comedies. As a creator, she has developed series with CBC, Global and YTV. She was nominated for a Gemini Award for Best Writer in a Dramatic Series and, with Tracey Deer, won the 2019 TIFF-CBC Screenwriter Award. She has a M.A. in theatre from Northwestern University and attended the Canadian Film Centre TV Writing Programme. Co-writing with Tracey Deer, their 2020 feature Beans had its World Premiere at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival. We list her credits as a Screenwriter first.
