Overview of the US business for the week of December 28

 

The box office ended the year on a high note, led by Warner Bros.' long-anticipated opening of Wonder Woman 1984. The superhero sequel to the 2017 blockbuster reached a new high for movies released to theatres during pandemic times, grossing an estimated $16.7M at 2,151 locations across North America.  Universal took places 2 and 3 with the $2.4M opening of News of the World followed by $1.7M for The Croods: A New Age in its 5th week, now adding up to a Domestic cume of $30.3M.

Our summary of industry news highlights progress last week on exhibitors securing much-needed financial assistance from the US government by way of the COVID relief bill. While not yet signed by the president, both US congressional chambers have passed the bill and it now appears likely to emerge as law at some point soon.
