The winners of the 11th Amorgos Tourism Film Festival

From the 10th to the 15th of November 2020, the 11th Amorgos Tourism Film Festival took place in Amorgos with a strict health protocol. The important cultural institution is a co-organization of the Cultural Association of Women of Amorgos and the Municipality of Amorgos and is implemented with the support of the Ministry of Culture, EOT, the Hellenic Cinema Center, and the Laskaridis Foundation.
What is Amorgos Tourism Film Festival?
Amorgos Tourism Film Festival is an international, four-day festival organized every year by the Cultural Association of Women of Amorgos. It started in 2010 in the framework of the 8th International Conference YPERIA for Culture and Tourism to create an international platform for the promotion of tourism through audiovisual media and awarding the best international tourist films and videos.
Through the creation of an international platform, the festival aims to encourage the promotion of global tourism through audiovisual media, to promote culture and tourism, not only in Amorgos and the Cyclades, but throughout Greece. Amorgos is a very small island that offers the authentic experience of Greece's Cycladic culture.
The Amorgos Tourist Film Festival was hosted again at the facilities of Aegialis Hotel & Spa, where all the health protection protocols from COVID-19 were strictly observed, with continuous disinfection of the facilities and social distancing in the projection rooms and restaurant.
In a statement, the Mayor of Amorgos, Lefteris Karaiskos, stated: "Amorgos is a cultural destination as well as the ideal setting for quality film productions. We had planned several innovations for this year's festival. Due to the coronavirus protection measures, great importance will be given to the screenings' online transmission. We monitor daily the epidemiological developments on which all events and actions on our island depend. Culture is our priority."
The jury awarded films from 15 countries, including Portugal, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Austria, Denmark and Greece, Maldives, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Peru. A total of over 600 short films from 30 different countries competed.
Hundreds of viewers from all over the world tuned in to YouTube, where the winning films were screened daily and speeches were given by prominent personalities in art and, of course, in the tourism industry. Journalist, Costas Margaritis, gave a speech on the importance of films for strengthening the local economy. At the same time, the producer and director of 360MediaTV from England, Mr. Laurence Koe, spoke about Amorgos as an international destination for filmmaking. Ms. Venia Vergou, director of the Hellenic Film Commission at the Hellenic Film Center, coordinated a panel on the link between film production and tourism development. Mr. Santi Valldeperez gave a speech on the production of tourist films and their importance in the tourism industry.
