Already a clean house, freshly cut grass or ended a new hobby? No worries, Go Short makes staying at home a bit more fun with the new on demand short film festival Go Short Online. With this initiative Go Short offers the hub to international prizes as the Oscars and presents the best Go Short 2020 has to offer available all from the comfort of your couch! So, stay at home, watch shorts and support talent!
The international short film festival that takes place in LUX every April was cancelled on 13 March, two weeks before the official opening of the festival, in response to the new measures relating the Covid-19 situation. In a rapid tempo Go Short created a VOD platform with partner ThisWayUp and two international short film festivals. “With Go Short Online we not only honour the film selection, on which the organisation has worked for one year, but we also retain the international stepping stone to important film prizes as the Oscars. In addition, we reinforce the international infrastructure for distribution of short films and we offer the audience a festival experience at home!” says director Kirsten Ruber.
Online awards
The platform, available to 13 May, offers 155 short films in the original curated programs. The organisation is in contact with filmmakers and beneficiaries and does not exclude the fact that more films will be available in the upcoming weeks. At the moment you can watch the European competition, that counts 45 films in 10 programs, 4 programs with the best films related to the Netherlands and 5 programs with talent from film academies all over
Europe. Members of the jury are among others producer and former Go Short winner Erik Glijnis, director Philbert Aimé Mbabazi and programmers of film festivals in Locarno and Montreal. The jury will decide who win the Go Short Awards, among others the VEVAM Go Short Award to the value of 5.000,-. The award ceremony takes place on Wednesday 29 April, 20:00 and will be streamed via Facebook and Instagram.
Experiment and basis for expansion in the future
Besides the newest shorts made by filmmakers all over Europe, the retrospective of makers in focus Corina Schwingruber Ilić and Nikola Ilić; the cynical comedy shorts of Norway; films about nature and the Current Issues programs are visible online. Go Short labels programs suited for youngsters and experiments with listed program tips, QA sessions and panels. “Transforming a physical festival to an online event in four weeks is an incredible achievement thanks to the team and flexibility of all the involved stakeholders.” says Ruber. The platform will continue to develop in the future.
