IFFLA 2020 unveils program lineup!

 

 

In its 18th year bringing you the finest cinema from India and the Indian diaspora, IFFLA is thrilled to announce yet another stellar lineup of nearly two dozen films, consisting of 5 World Premieres, spanning 12 languages, and 50% helmed by women directors! The festival will take place April 1-5 across three venues: Regal L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles, IFFLA’s first home ArcLight Hollywood, and the Harmony Gold theater in West Hollywood. Tickets and Passes now on sale.

IFFLA’s 2020 honoree is Imtiaz Ali, one of Hindi cinema’s most charismatic writer-directors known for distinctive yet relatable love stories such as JAB WE MET and ROCKSTAR. During the Opening Night Gala, Ali will be joined onstage by acclaimed indie filmmaker Anurag Kashyap (GANGS OF WASSEYPUR) to converse about Ali’s influential career, leading into a screening of HIGHWAY, Ali’s renowned 2014 romantic road thriller.



Particularly exciting, these auteurs will host a MASTER CLASS SERIES on Saturday April 4, in which Kashyap will first discuss his development as a director, and then Ali will elaborate on his approach to collaborating with actors.



The fest will conclude with the delightful, coming of age high school comedy, THE MISEDUCATION OF BINDU, featuring rising star Megan Suri, produced by the Duplass Brothers and directed by Prarthana Mohan.



Program highlights include Arati Kadav’s sci-fi fantasy CARGO, about demon astronauts performing reincarnation in space; Gitanjali Rao’s handpainted animation opus BOMBAY ROSE; Geetu Mohandas’ Malayalam action-thriller with a queer heart, MOOTHON; and Baljit Sangra’s unmissable documentary BECAUSE WE ARE GIRLS about the courageous journey of three Punjabi Canadian sisters.



Notably, IFFLA’s eclectic Shorts Programs feature a half dozen stories from the diaspora. Los Angeles-based filmmakers include Deepak Sethi with his hilarious Danny Pudi-starrer COFFEE SHOP NAMES; Pia Shah and Mahesh Pailoor tell a personal tale about impending motherhood in THE SHOWER; and Kahlil Maskati and Andrew Carter narrate a touching father-son dramedy, UNCLE, featuring Rizwan Manji.

Opening Night Gala: Conversation with Imtiaz Ali

What distinguishes Imtiaz Ali from his contemporaries is his astute grasp of modern love in India. Join us as we celebrate Ali, commencing with an on-stage conversation between Ali and Anurag Kashyap, leading into a screening of Ali’s enthralling Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda-starring 2014 road thriller, HIGHWAY. The red carpet event will take place at ArcLight Hollywood, followed by a dinner reception and after party at Spice Affair in Beverly Hills. Buy tickets.

Closing Night Gala: THE MISEDUCATION OF BINDU

Thrust into the woes of high school after being homeschooled, desperate Indian American teen Bindu Chaudry (Megan Suri) finds a questionable solution. With brazen humor, director Prarthana Mohan dives into the peculiar world of adolescent misfits and bullies. Cast and crew including actor David Arquette and Executive Producer Mark Duplass are expected to attend the Gala screening at Harmony Gold in West Hollywood, which will be preceded by the Awards Ceremony and followed by dinner and after party at Spice Affair in Beverly Hills. Buy tickets.
