Film Fest 919, set for Wednesday, October 9 through Sunday, October 13, 2019, has announced a new program, “Offscreen: Interactive Student Symposium,”bringing a rich experience to area college students, and a special presentation by four-time Academy Award-winning Visual Effects Supervisor Joe Letteri, about the 20+year evolution of visual effects (VFX) at Weta Digital. Passes are now available for purchase online.
“This year’s Film Fest 919 will allow us to wrap our arms around the extraordinary collegiate population in North Carolina with a special program designed just for them,” said Randi Emerman, founder and CEO of Film Fest 919.
“We are also honored to host Joe Letteri, a visual effects luminary, who will show us how magic is made on the big screen,” adds Carol Marshall, co-founder of Film Fest 919.
The Offscreen: Interactive Student Symposium is available to students at all surrounding North Carolina universities. A partnership with Film Studies professor Rick Warner of UNC Chapel Hill’s English and Comparative Literature department, this program will give students the opportunity to interact with directors, screenwriters, producers and others in the industry as part of their own master class, enabling them to make connections and gain further understanding of the business of film.
“We are thrilled to offer this unique program to college students," said Warner. "Film Fest 919 will bring international cinema to North Carolina, giving our students and the community the opportunity to see some of this year's most innovative films and filmmakers."
In addition, FF919 will feature a special presentation by Academy Award®-winning special effects supervisor and Director of Weta Digital, Joe Letteri. Letteri will share his valuable insights with the audience and discuss how the craft has evolved from the early days of motion capture on The Lord of the Rings all the way through virtual production on Avatar, remote onset capture work on the Planet of the Apes trilogy and the refinement of the facial animation process that allowed Weta Digital to create ‘Thanos,’ ‘Alita’ and the digital human work for Will Smith in Ang Lee’s upcoming Gemini Man.
Epitomizing the slogan “Catch the Films Before They Catch On,” Film Fest 919 conveys the true spirit of a film festival, presenting a diverse breadth of narrative features to the Triangle area’s enthusiastic, film-loving audience. In the festival’s inaugural year, several of the films programmed went on to win the Academy Award, including Best Picture.
Passes are now available to be purchased at https://filmfest919.com/2019-passes/, on a limited basis, and will provide moviegoers the opportunity to experience the award season before it happens. Film Fest 919 takes place at the Silverspot Cinema in University Place for a five-day event. The full list of films will be announced early September.
