Tribeca reviews: "The Gasoline Thieves"

Lalo is a fourteen-year-old farmhand who lives with his mother in rural Mexico. He is trying to gain the attention of a young girl, Ana. When Ana tells him that she would like a smartphone, Lalo thinks about buying her one, however, he finds out that his mother has spent all of his money on medical bills. Looking to earn a quick income, Lalo seeks out the illegal underground world of siphoning gasoline from government pipelines. He soon finds himself way in over his head, and his life in danger.
The Huachicoleros, or gasoline thieves, really exist. This network of kids walk around small towns with disposable income and are changing rural Mexico's society today. Director: Edgar Nito.
