Artist's Film Projected On Museum's Modernist Walls

Tuesday, January 16----On the coldest night of the year so far, the Museum of Modern Art and Creative Time, the New York–based public art organization, unveiled the newest film from visual artist Doug Aitken, which is being projected onto the Museum's modernist building in midtown Manhattan. The film SLEEPWALKERS, which features an international cast including Tilda Swinton and Donald Sutherland, will have free outdoor screenings on the Museum's facade for the next four weeks...a spectacularly lush edition to New York's fabled nightlife.

SLEEPWALKERS is the artist's first large-scale public artwork in the United States, and the first to bring art to the Museum of Modern Art's exterior walls, since it reopened a few years ago after a multi-million dollar expansion and renovation. Eight continuous sequences of film scenes will be projected onto six facades of the Museum, including the front and back on West 53rd Street and West 54th Streets, and the walls of the inner courtyard which houses the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden.

Inspired by the densely built environment of New York's midtown, the artist has created a cinematic art experience that directly integrates with the architectural fabric of the city. By projecting onto what is arguably New York's most visited public building, the project simultaneously enhances and challenges viewers' perceptions of public space. SLEEPWALKERS, filmed in New York City, will be shown daily from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., and will be visible from many public vantage points adjacent to the Museum.
