Save the Children: More than 50,000 children in Yemen are expected to die by the end of the year as a result of disease and starvation caused by the stalemated war in the country.



A Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen's government has said it will not allow rebel-controlled air and sea ports to reopen until a better system is put in place to prevent alleged weapons smuggling. The blockade has closed the major entry ports of Hodeidah and Saleef, as well as the airport in the capital Sanaa, which has severely hindered the access of food and aid.



Seven million people are on the brink of famine in the country, which is in the grips of the largest cholera outbreak in modern history. An estimated 130 Yemeni children are dying every day and an estimated 400,000 children will need treatment for acute malnutrition this year.

Angelina Jolie's Powerful Speech at UN Peacekeeping Summit

Angelina Jolie delivered a powerful keynote speech at the UN Peacekeeping Defence Ministerial Conference in Vancouver on Wednesday, calling on international conflict negotiators to take their role in preventing and punishing sexual violence more seriously.

Jolie called on those gathered to recognize sexual violence as a weapon and “a critical obstacle to achieving women’s equality and our full human rights.”



The mom-of-six, who is a Special Envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, references current conflicts around the globe, obliquely addressing the current wave of sexual abuse allegations lobbed at men in Hollywood.

Tolerance must be more than indifference and the passive acceptance of others. Tolerance must be seen as an act of liberation, whereby the differences of others are accepted as the same as our own. This means respecting the great diversity of humanity on the basis of human rights. It means reaching out to others across new bridges of dialogue. This means standing up to all forms of racism, hatred and discrimination, because discrimination against one is discrimination against all.

All cultures are different, but humanity is a single community, sharing values, a past and future. All people are different, and this is a strength for all societies, for creativity and innovation. There are seven billion ways of ‘being human,’ but we stand together as members of the same family, all different, all equally seeking respect for rights and dignity.

The Other Side of Hope (2017)

This film tells two stories that converge after forty minutes. The first of these features Khaled, a Syrian refugee. A stowaway on a coal freighter, he ends up in Helsinki where he applies for asylum without much hope of success. Wikström, the second main character, is a travelling salesman peddling ties and men’s shirts. Turning his back on his trade, he instead decides to put his poker face to good use at a gambling table and subsequently buys himself a restaurant in the remotest corner of Helsinki.
