For far too long, talented women have been unheralded and unheard.
Here are the facts:

Of the top 250 films of 2016, just 7% were directed by women.

Of the top 100 films of 2016, only 29% of all protagonists were female.

Of the top 100 films of 2016, females accounted for only 32% of all speaking characters.

I’m so proud that TIFF has announced a five-year commitment to increase participation, skills, and opportunities for women behind and in front of the camera.
Together we’re going to:

Launch a new, three-month residency programme connecting an emerging female creator with an established female filmmaker;

Develop a new female speaker series designed to spark conversation amongst women in the industry and provide deeper insight into the art of filmmaking;
-
Design comprehensive resources for teachers to enhance the curriculum and support classroom discussions about the role of women in cinema
But this ambitious initiative comes at a cost. To make this movement a reality, we need to raise $500,000 in 2017.
