Works In Progress Showcase

 

Finnish Film Affair is a showcase of Finnish films and a networking platform for attending industry professionals. Finland's main film industry event takes place yearly in a welcoming and laid-back yet professional setting. The fourth edition of the industry event of the Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy proved once again successfull amongst its participants.



The event attracted an attendance of over 300 participants, of which about 90 were international and over 200 domestic accredited industry professionals.



The international participants included representatives of sales companies (such as Fortissimo, Memento Films, Pluto Films, etc.), distributors and TV-buyers (Jupiter Films, Kinosmith, Viasat, etc.), festival programmers (Sundance, Seattle, SXSW, etc.) and representatives of the press (The Hollywood Reporter, Screen International, Variety, BBC, etc.).

For the first time, the Finnish Film Affair handed out a 3000 € Best Pitch award, sponsored by the Finnish Film Foundation, for the most promising Work-In-Progress to be spent on international marketing. The winner was director Elli Toivoniemi for the documentary Once I Was a Dragonfly. Toivoniemi produced the Academy Award-nominated short Do I Have to Take Care of Everything?. 



The jury consisted of Berenice Fugard, Senior Vice President of Fortissimo Films, Robert Burke, the Managing Director at the TenOne Entertainment and Barbara Gasser from Hollywood Foreign Press Association. According to the jury, “Elli has a rare talent for capturing stunning visuals and telling a complex story in a relatable way. She also understands how to create an invisible bond between the subject of her documentary and the audience.”  A delegation of nine Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) members attended the Finnish Film Affair and co-hosted the sauna island reception where the winner of the Best Pitch award was announced.

Developing a Film for the American Markets - panel
 

The Finnish Film Affair industry panel “Developing a film for the American markets” proved so popular with the Finnish industry that it had to be relocated to a larger space. The panel was organized in collaboration with Team Finland initiative "Getting it Made for the US Markets" organized by Finnish Film Foundation, Favex and Tekes. The panel was moderated by producer Gudrun Giddings and the panelists included Jon Levin (CAA), Ryan Wickers (EuropaCorp), Peter Trinh (ICM), Hussain Currimbhoy (Sundance Film Festival) and Robert Burke (TenOne Entertainment).

The Finnish Film Affair offers industry program and a showcase of Finnish films at the Helsinki International Film Festival - Love & Anarchy. Approximately 90 international sales agents, tv-buyers, distributors and programmers are invited to attend. Over 200 Finnish filmmakers attend FFA annually.
