Argo wins best film at the Oscars
Ben Affleck's Iran rescue thriller "Argo" which premiered in Toronto has won best picture at the 85th Academy Awards over Spielberg's Lincoln, one of several surprises at the ceremony. Observers believed Affleck would also win the Best Director trophy, but Ang Lee received his second Oscar in that category after his first claim to that honour with Brokeback Mountain in 2005.
Daniel Day-Lewis made Oscar history and won his third Best Actor trophy for his portrayal of Lincoln.
Emmanuelle Riva Amour celebrated her 86th birthday in Los Angeles but left the Best Actress statue to Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook. Riva received the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role and the César Award for Best Actress for her role in Amour and is the oldest actress ever to have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Amour's director Michael Haneke accepted the award for Best Foreign Language Film winning the Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Awards recognition in that category as well as best European Film, Director...at The European Film Awards (winning 4 prizes).
The ceremony was streamlined and entertaining thanks to host Seth MacFarlane who offered laughs, jokes and jabs and a tribute to recent movie musicals, James Bond themes and an outstanding performance by Shirley Bassey.
