International Short Film Festival Berlin focus

The 26th International Short Film Festival Berlin will be held from the 16th to the 21st of November 2010. Boasting 6.00 entries from 110 countries, 450 shortfilms, 50 programs and an expected audience of 13,000, the International Short Film Festival is the greatest of its kind in Berlin and a significant cultural institution.
‘For one whole film-filled week, interfilm offers a cinematic kaleidoscope comprising six competition categories, two foreign focuses, numerous special programs and plenty of parties and live events. The Festival Opening Night Gala will be held on the 16th of November at the Volksbühne and the Awards Ceremony will take place on the 21st of November at Kino Babylon.
This year’s Foreign Focuses couldn’t possibly be more contrary: India and Ireland. The cinematic experience, “Beyond Bollywood” is a collection of dedicated films revealing the lives of people in each of the subcontinent’s regions, without a hint of Bollywood glamour. “Incredibly Irish” is a program of Irish short films bursting with memorable characters and adept storytelling. Beyond that, a further thematic focus promises to provide insight into the world of handmade animation.
A particular highlight is the program dedicated to Chinese animation, an incredibly rare commodity on the international short film scene. One forward-looking focus addresses diverse aspects relating to the environment; in addition, a lecture will be held on ecological filmmaking beyond the mainstream. This year’s Metropolis program will spotlight Mexico City. Moreover, an additional festival focal point is provided by one of the special programs, Sound and Vision, where musicians and DJs create new, live soundtracks for an eclectic mix of short films.
Shorts for Kids: KUKI, the 3rd International Short Film Festival for Children and Youth Berlin will run from the 14th to the 21st of November 2010 at Filmtheater am Friedrichshain. With more than 500 festival entries at their disposal, the team at KUKI were able to put together nine entertaining and informative programs. This year’s thematic emphasis is on “Nature and the Environment”. The documentary program, “Watch the World” is a window to children’s lives all over the planet. KUKI welcomes school classes back to its English and Spanish foreign language programs. Naturally there will also be numerous programs of competition films and a children’s jury to select the winner.
