About the Director:

Born in Seoul, Korea, Gloria Ui Young Kim comes from a long line of writers and media makers. After getting her degree in English Literature at the University of Toronto, Gloria decided to follow in her grandfather and uncle’s footsteps and pursued her love of film attending Ryerson for Image Arts while working as a journalist for Maclean’s. Her short film ROCK GARDEN: A LOVE STORY (R/T 10:50, 2007), described by Atom Egoyan as “absolutely beautiful” and “perverse,” has extensively toured the festival circuit and won the Global Audience Award for Best Anarchy Film at Slamdance 2008, a Special Jury Prize at Worldfest 2008 and been nominated for Best Cinematography-Shorts at the 2009 Canadian Society of Cinematographers Awards. Gloria is a recent grad of the Canadian Film Centre’s Director’s Lab and has been nominated for the 2009 K.M. Hunter’s Award-Film & Video by the Ontario Arts Council for her body of work. She has two feature projects in development, THE BANQUET, about a misanthropic chef who learns to embrace her culture, family and love, and HE, a modern-day re-telling of the mythological journey of the fool set in the metropolis of Athens.

Film synopsis:
It's Christmas in Toronto, 1978. Eight-year-old Meehee Park longs for two things: to make her mother happy and to get a Cindy doll from Santa. But she soon realizes that Santa isn't real and her parents are struggling to make ends meet. This distresses Meehee to no end, that is until one fateful day when she comes across a neighbourhood auction that will pit her two greatest desires, leaving Meehee to choose between dreams of the past and fitting in with the present.
