Film synopsis:

Hansjorg Stahli is the diligent Chief Refuse Detective of a picture-perfect town in Switzerland. His daily focus to maintain cleanliness and perfection is seldom interrupted, except perhaps when visiting Lily Frei, a charming local waitress with whom he is painfully in love. Unfortunately his attempts to woo her usually fail as Lily has a secret passion of her own: filling her tiny flat with tonnes of garbage. When Hansjorg solves his most difficult littering crime to date, their shared endeavour of rubbish collection is awkwardly fused as the feisty perpetrator reveals to be none other than Emma, Lilyʼs troubled daughter.

Film reviews:
The Swiss secret formula for heartfelt cinema gets under your skin. [...] The Swiss middle class blended with Americana is a treat for the eyes. [...] Looking like a worn-out teddy bear, Bruno Cathomas is overwhelming, both melancholic and wise. [...] The film is filled with marvellous ideas and possesses a liberty and an energy that we see only too rarely in German speaking cinema. Simone Meier, Tages-Anzeiger Recycling Lily, Pierre Monnard's striking first feature, is a delightful and retro-chic variation on the Swiss clichés
Geri Krebs, NZZ

Hurry to watch this gem. With Recycling Lily, Pierre Monnard scores a memorable and inspared debut. A very sensible opus that touches you from the beginning and still haunts you long after it's finished.

Jean-Philippe Bernard, Le Matin

Recycling Lily is a great feel-good comedy that comes around only too rarely in Swiss cinema. Bold visuals, lots of charm, strong humour and a love for the detail turn this romantic comedy between two outsiders into a real delight of a movie.

Lucien Esseiva, 20 Minuten

Pierre Monnard executes a masterstroke in letting the relationships between his characters constantly evolve in an unexpected way. With plenty of humour, but never at the expense of his protagonists, he depicts the daily routine of a society obsessed with perfection and cleanliness in order to avoid much deeper psychoses.

Reto Meisser, Migros Magazin

Thanks to its tactful sense of caricature, the film holds it promise. It's a comedy that we want to watch and watch again, if only for its love of small detail, which is a constant discovery.

Ernst Seibold, TV Taglich

With its pastel tones typical of the 50's, Recycling Lily is pure eye candy. It would need a magnifying glass to distinguish a flaw in the pink wallpaper of this perfect comedy. Urs Arnold, Apero Kultur Mag and Cineman Pierre Monnard avoids social realism with great ease, trading it for vivid colours, sitcom-like satire and clichés pushed to delightful absurdity. The result is so exhilarating that we can only rub ours eyes with disbelief that such a charming comedy could have seen the light of day in Swiss cinema.

Charles Martig, Katholischer Mediendienst

A real gem. [...] Pierre Monnard succeeds with Recycling Lily, his first feature film, a masterstroke. The film is a modern fairy-tale filled with originality and featuring a flashy look courtesy of the 1950's. Although contemporary, the film possesses a timeless quality. [...] With the bin inspector and the hoarder, the director explores the theme to its core.

Mario Schell, Bieler Tagblatt

Monnard directs his film with a light hand and a cheeky wink, coming up with unforgettable quirky supporting characters and remains playful, even when it gets serious. He surprises us with visually innovative twists and lets the viewer guess when this love story is really taking place.

Mario Cortesi, Biel-Bienne Zeitung and TeleBielingue

Recycling Lily is a vibrant movie unlike anything that has ever been seen before in the Swiss movie industry. [...] It is a delight of a film from the beginning to the end: A well acted, well produced and highly entertaining feel-good comedy made for a big audience.

Mohan Mani, Newly Swissed Magazine

Not only is the story told through vividly creative visuals that combine Swissness with 50's Americana, but the characters and their flaws are always true. Consequently the performances are striking and echo a social critic of themes such as loneliness, monoparental education and the constraint or the refusal of conventions.

Andreas Leisi, Zurcher Oberland Gesamtausgabe

Recycling Lily is heartfelt movie filled with striking colours and a great sense of humour.

Outnow.ch

The best of Swiss cinema.

Friday Magazine
